Bad Soil and the Pro XL

[size=medium]Hi Group I recently aquired a nice Whites Pro XL Detector and have moved to the UP of Mich from So. MN. To my horror I cannot use the stock 'Deep Scan" 950 coil in this high Iron
matrix soil. When I GB the Pro XL the "Sig Balance" is in the "Bad Soil" range. If I put a coin on the surface the "Depth" reads 3" for and coin. It seems the SBalance is so low that I lose 3" of depth when G. Balance.....somewhat like using the cars "High Beam" in very foggy weather.
I put the "Blue Max 600" coil on and all worked much better.....depth and stability, much higher Signal Balance levels. This soil masks detection depths for coins. A bazzilion coins are waiting to be found at 6" or less depth because I think any previous coin hunters were met with the same fate.

Any suggestion(s) on working in iron soil would be welcomed. Maybe the Pro Xl is not optimum for this soil makeup:confused:??

Did you experiment using the GEB/SAT mode ? Possibly the other modes as well ? Did you run it with both Hot Rock Reject on and off (even if the signal balance is in the Bad Ground range).

It may be that your last statement is indeed correct...."Maybe the Pro Xl is not optimum for this soil makeup:confused:??"

I always thought the key to the XL-PRO was the SAT MODE with the 5.3 coil or the 600 you are using now. With this set up you can slow down your sweep and concentrate on the softer lock on hit's. In this mode the audio is modulated so the targets don't all sound the same making it easier to go after the deeper 6''-8'' older coins. Also should help in hotter ground. I always ran with hot rock accept on to help with depth. They take a little patience with this set-up in trash,But it will pick the coins out. It is a great detector,I just wish it had Tone I.D. though as that would make it that much better. IMHO.

I always set the Signal Balance just past the preset at about 2:30 to 3:00 o'clock, set the Tuner to a just audible hum. then find a bare spot of mineralized ground. I check the bare spot for metal in pinpoint mode, then I do the ground balance in G.E.B. Disc mode and do the auto-track air and ground beeps. I sweep the ground in G.E.B. Disc mode to get a good GB, then LOCK the GB in the middle position on the auto-track. Then I check the GB by pulling pinpoint trigger to check the GB, starting with a coil height of 8" to 9" above ground, lower coil to the ground and listen to threshold, it should remain the same or go slightly positive. This may take several tries to get right, then when I am satisfied with the GB, I will LOCK the GB to the middle position on the auto-track. Then I am off hunting in G.E.B. Disc. mode. For coils, I like to use a good thin profile 8" coil, either the ProScan 800 or Royal 800, then if I run into a lot of closely spaced trash I will use one of the 6

Hombre is one of the few lucky ones with a Tone I.D. Modded XL-PRO! You lucky dog you! I don't know why Whites never did this to the XL-PRO when a guy in Poland can do it in his basement? Kinda embarrassing White's.

One of White's engineers actually came up with the Tone ID component for the big box 6000 Di Pro SL, but it would not fit in the new slim line XL Pro box.

He ended up sending the schematic to Mrand from Poland and he reinvented a smaller surface mount Tone ID which would fit in the XL Pro. I got the kit back in 2009 and had megadivers install the kit for me, still working great. I've been playing around with the TR Disc. in multi tone with the snooper 350 coil. I think we have a winner here folks....ding ding ding.
