Bad eggs spoil the basket.....

I was reading this historical paper that comes out several times per year and was upset by an article if true about members of our hobby. I plan to write them a letter next week when I have more time and try to educate the people who read this paper that if this is true, it only represents a small number of the people in our hobby and the majority are ethical detectorists. I had one other photo, but didn't resize it at home and can't get it to fit right now. It only takes a few bad apples to spoil it for the people who do it right. This was published April-2015.

What a strange little article! Almost reads like heresay or rumor in and of itself..almost as if the editor took some liberties on us for some reason?...in an effort to fill a dead air space with this "respect property" treatise..

Careful there Fongu...I think this guy already has made his mind up about detectorists in general.. Lets see how he responds to you and all the good we do and are actually handy people for landowners to know.:clapping:
Mud..

I am sending them a letter this week. Mud, I thought this sounded incredible myself, but after going behind some idiots with detectors, I'm keeping an open mind about it and letting them know we are an ethical hobby and don't judge the whole barrel, by a few bad apples. Trying to post the front of the little historical newspaper and anybody else who wants to write them feel free, but keep it positive. When I get my letter ready, I will post it and later on post their response if I get one.

I wrote a letter today and will mail it Saturday morning and will post any response I get, good or bad.

To Whom It May Concern:

I read the article on page 23, in the April issue about the violation of private property by someone using a metal detector and wanted to write to you and express my opinion on this.

This does not represent the majority of people in our hobby who voluntarily abide by a code of ethics and only represents a very small minority. There are bad apples in every barrel and we must sort them out and remove them from our hobby to save those who are ethical members and always ask permission to go on private property.

Not only do I ask permission from private property owners, I always check with the people who manage public property and get their permission and assure them I will leave no holes unfilled and carry out small trash items. I’m a taxpayer and it is public property, but I feel I have an ethical responsibility to ask.

I feel that I perform a public service by removing trash such as nails, broken glass, fish hooks, syringes and needles from public parks and swim areas. I also work to educate people about our hobby and we are not out to destroy public or private property, but to recover and protect it.

A few coins or relics are a small reward for our efforts and the fresh air and being outdoors is our greatest pleasure.

Sincerely,
W. L. Ellerbee
