I have no shame admitting i'm new, that being said..........i bought a cortez about 2mos ago and have found a bunch of coins and am on the 2nd set of batteries,in the backyard i had found a 63 silver quarter ,a buffalo nickle w/no readable date and a 1930 and 46 wheatie but was out today and the cortes was skittish bouncing around from 41,42 to 66 to briefly 95 and sometimes dig and end up being"i couldn't find nothing" so i went inside read the manual again and went out and buried the silver Q and yes it was picked up at 8 inches where the cortez was like a whisper but sure enough read 95 then after figuring out it was properly tuned found a 48d and 50d wheatie in about 15 mins and me w/ no glasses told my daughter the only thing i'm sure of is they are copper pennies in a second she said "dad they're both wheat pennies" lol makes me think the backyard may still hold more !

Sounds like you have some more fun to have in your back yard. Nice start to the back yard hunting!
