You can turn it off completely, go to Menu, scroll to the right to Options Menu, drop down to Backlight and turn it off.

Brightness
Backlight brightness can be set in single increments ranging from 1 to 10.
The Backlight settings are only available when the Backlight is not controlled by the user buttons. The options are:
