No, there's no backlight. It would probably chew into the batteries a little much if it had one.
A couple of users here hunt at night with an Tri-lens LED clipped to the brim of their hat/caps.
Have never missed it myself. I think only tourist based beachcombers detecting at dusk would find it essential.
If you're out at dark you'd want a good torch with you anyway.
