I posted about my lack of great finds compared to my friend when I went here a few weeks ago (post moved to Metal Detecting comparing Vaq. and another machine). Advice I got on this forum suggested I go back to my stock coil. I did that and spent about 3 hours there this morning. As you can see I found a lot of iron. I can identify the horse or mule shoe (age?) but I need help with the other iron pieces if any look interesting. I also posted a picture of the nails. However, I did find some non-ferrous objects/ One appears to be a toe cleat, two are shells from a 10 gauge (Western New Chief) and the other is a 12 gauge (M.F.A.) Co. pointer which I heard made shells for Sears. Finally, there is a piece of copper or brass that looks like a bell (?) but too thin, your guess would help. For the hunt I found that high disc. did not eliminate most of the iron. In fact, the 12 gauge shell DISC'ed out right below 5 cents on the V, the 10 gauge shell right above iron, the bell(?) right above TAB, and the toe cleat a bit farther above TAB. Thus, if I used high DISC I would not find anything but iron. I was not super-tuning. I hunted a bit in AM, but with so much iron, it didn't seem worth it. In fact if I super-tuned, some of the rocks have enough iron to give a tone. I would appreciate comments about the finds, my method, etc.
Thanks,
Andy from Hillsborough

With the larger iron like you have there, if when you get a signal you can try and guage the size of the item by pinpointing and outlining. Also on large iron, if you lift your coil and are several inches off the ground and if your still getting a strong signal, chances are it's big iron. Though I like finding the animal shoes you have there.

thats good that you dig that Iron , it will mask something good and now you can hit the good targets + it shows how old your site is most detectors will hit those nails even my GT hit them nothings fool proof the fact that you are digging non ferrous is great if something is in their you will find it .
