Back to the Fairgrounds

Mark in S.E. IA

Last week I was at a fairgrounds and they dug out a area an back filled it with gravel. In that area and the dirt piles I found some nice old coins so this week I went back to work the grass a round this area.
Sat I was there for about 7 hours and I learned somethings about this area. The sod and dirt was about 3" to 4" deep and then their was about a 2" deep layer of fine gravel and pea gravel and then the old coins was just below that layer.
Also, this area was loaded with rusty nails of all sizes. I found at least 1 nail and as many as 3 nails in every hole I found a old coin in. It was a real pain for me since I am new with the Etrac. I dug several holes that only had nails in it, lol.
For the day I ended up finding 5 silver dimes, 18 wheat's and a pewter buckle, oh yea, I did find a nice bunch of clad too. I never pass up a clad quarter, lol

If anyone knows anything about the buckle please let me know. I've only found one other and that one is brass.

Nice finds! If those dirt piles are still it might be fun to shovel the dirt through a screen to see what pops out! Just a thought:twodetecting:

That fairgrounds is a productive site. Five silvers in one day is great! Nice going finding that area!

Those corroded nails are something else. I can usually pass over the big ones, but those deep stubby ones usually pass the 2-way test. Just got to dig.

Very nice Mark! Thanks for the background to your hunt and the picture. Congratulations on the silver!
