[/img] Got tutored and slapped in the face today.Horse day had to move to the other side of the fair grounds found another 2 acres of solid trash i started hunting about a half on hour i was ready to pull my hair out if i had any finally i get a zinc penny at 2 inches and said i guess it works. So i start hunting real slow get a 12.40 12.43 one way other way is total junk signal so i pinpoint and sweep again total erratic junk signal i move back and hit the 12.40 to 12.43 keep the coil in the same place and pinpoint with target trace on the cursor starts filling up as i move forward another cursor starts filling at 12.30 i keep swinging and both cursors fill pinpoint and sweep again and it's total junk. So pinpoint over the center of the target and sweep and the cursor starts filling at 12.30 kind of smeared so i go were i hit the 12.40 to 12.43 and pinpoint cursor starts filling in dime penny range as i move forward where signal is strongest the 12.30 fills again now i got to cursors filled 1 at 12.43 1 at 12.30 so i release the pinpoint trace and pinpoint again and the 12.30 fills again. It says 6 inches deep so i dig down 4 inches a bottle cap and 2 inches away a 1904 barber what the.I think i found how to use this target trace if you approach a target and get a hit at the leading edge and press and hold target trace it well fill that # but as your holding it in and try to center where target is strongest and there is junk that's larger it well fill that # also but if you center the strongest signal which would have been the cap the dime well disappear.I also got a 12.13 target trace filled moved forward and cursor starts to smear from 12.06 to 12.30 find center of target sweep it total junk only at leading edge of coil i have a good signal so i dig down 4 inches that's what the ctx says and it's a bottle cap rescan and says 12.13 6 inches dig down 1903 v nickel.I get home take a bottle cap and place a dime by it 2 inches away hitting the dime with the leading edge 12.43 pinpoint target trace starts to fill at 12.43 as i move forward target trace fills the 12.30 also but if i release the pinpoint and start over the center of the target only the bottle cap cursor fills and if you sweep the center of the target it's says total junk I have been finding targets that hit good only to pinpoint the target center would move and I would think it's junk now i have to start over what i hunted because i know i left targets i passed on. Any how I'm beat spent 8 hours digging all coins came in at 6 inches or less did find a 1906 barber with a nail right on top of it also i tied my Indian count from last year at 20 and got plenty of time to up that.

Thanks for the lesson on how to do it sube :clapping: I think we are just now learning the advanced aspects of this great machine.

Congratulations on the nice finds too.

Very nice! Are the grounds still being used for fairs and carnivals today?

There's a field that was a carnival ground when I was a kid (silver coin era). I'm not sure how long ago it was being held there before "my time". My father did tell me where there was a pavillion at which they sold sandwiches. It will be a good fall hunt since it's all open and in the blazing sun.

Also, same area, I asked my sister to track down the owner of a school that exists on an 1885 map I have. It's still there as an apartment building. She came up with a name and is looking for a telephone number so I can call to ask permission. I ready for the next trip!!!

Great finds Sube. Something to consider is the ferrous scale of the CTX seems to be real reliable when hunting in ferrous coin even on moderate to deep coins. I realize that a lot of bottlecaps for example would come in at a ferrous of 12, but if you ever see a coin conductive number flash in the screen from a consistent spot it's probably worth digging. I feel if it was junk beside the dime i.e. the ferrous number would probably get pulled up or down. In your digs today you found bottle caps with your coins which I'll bet will give 12 ferrous numbers when scanned on top of the ground. The 12 ferrous number in the screen may be a bigger player in the dig no dig than we think. With etrac we didn't have this luxury. Think about it for as minute. What targets would give 12 ferrous numbers in an old fairground besides bottle caps and pulltabs, and cans that we would not try and dig. Sure there are exceptions but not many. And I'm surprised some folks haven't experimented with the 2fe and 4fe profile types.

Congrats again Sube!!

It really helps me to hear how you approach these extremely junky areas! I am going to have to take a patience pill though...LOL!

Nice scores from that trashy old fairground Sube - I have been slowing down in this heat and finding more in areas that I thought were too beat up to still have anything good. This machine has tremendous separation and can nail deep old targets in the middle of some pretty fierce trash :surprised:

Squirrel 1 yes most come in at 12 but i get a lot in the 10s 11s and 13s depending how rusted they are mostly have about 1/4 missing the thing is if you hit a signal from the south and get your 12.43 and it's close to a bottle cap say 2 inches pinpoint with the leading edge you probably are centered but if you center the target it well be pulled to the cap and give a junk signal spatter smeared and bad tone..you well only hit this from one way the other ways are junk signals.Going back to target trace it well only fill the cursor hitting it with the leading edge and as you center it to the strongest signal it well display the cap and dime in separate cursors but if you release the target trace and pinpoint on center the dime cursor well be gone so when you get your12.43 hold that target trace button all the time tell you center to dig other wise the dime cursor will be gone.Anyhow i think when you get your 12.43 you should pinpoint with your leading edge and dig, if the target moves when you pinpoint just relocate the 12.43 with the leading edge and dig does this make any since i think I'm confusing myself lol.DukeoBass yes been used for 145 years.Porshephile yea when you find them send me some to lol.Now only if the 6 inch coil would show it might change things.

I understand all of what you said. I will be trying to pay more attention to what your referring to. You're doing well with your detector. Keep a digging and posting. i read folks stories about their finds. I can always learn something no matter how big or small.

Squirrel1 yea this kind of open my eye's the first one i though was a fluke but when i got the nickel things started going off in my head.I don't cover much ground but i check a lot of signals and when i look up I'm right where i started.I like to just go whipping around but this is working for me i figure all the people before me whip threw here and didn't find much because they were heading to the promise land yet it was right at there feet lol.Doc 64 that is a understatement this detector has a lot to offer book might help but till you do it yourself it stick;s better in your head .

Excellent post sube I am sitting here no wondering what I should have checked out more and left it thinking I had a small handle on trash vs treasure. I will most certainly investigate further. Congrats on continuing to pull awesome keepers from those fair grounds.

Don I think you have a lot of great fairgrounds where you live granted you have ten times the people that detect there but there is probably ten times the coins there hid in the trash that every body's walk over took me a while to see a area that had a lot of use over the years .As far as finding the coins if you have areas which are carpeted with trash there still there just have to use different methods to open it up.that means slow.MTWolf2270 the only way to catch all these cions by trash is to go 4 different ways north south east west or maybe get lucky and snag a 6 inch coil where ever they are.
