Back to the clad mines, first three hunts of 08

DFX-Gregg

Well-known member
with a goal of $800 in clad and record temps for 3 days...I was able to get out all 3. Best hunt was today with over $8 in clad using the 5.3 coil. The small junk butterfly on the top right plate came in with a vdi of 10....The 3 day total was $18.51... Hopefully a year with less coins...but higher total dollar amount...digging less zinc cents this year.

Another good day in the "Windy City"

You said you were going to dig less zinc cents this year. Out of all of the cents
you dug last year did you check your ratio of copper to zinc ?
Thanks,
AZ Coinshooter

No...but it seems my wheaties come in from 72, like to sit on 75 or 79(which is also my dime area 78-79)...so I am trying to lay off the signals from 58-69....also have noticed a major decrease in bottlecaps...now waiting for the wheaties to reappear... I dug over 5000 cents last year...I am thinking less coins per trip with a higher per coin value....

I'm betting you'll hit your goal ...

Did you say there were near 550 parks in your area?

I just can't comprehend something like that.

Must be the friendliest people there!

Yes area wide over 550 parks and 39 beaches....A guy on the lake front said as soon as the sun rises he can see people everywhere with detectors outside his condo window overlooking Lake Michigan. Last year I worked 15 parks...and hit a few others...just added one new one and going to add 5 more once it warms up here... It is incredible park wise...with a city of over 2 million people a lot of parks are needed. There are 10 parks on the way home from work...those have been the main ones I have been hitting... Also tons of forest preserves which I hunt once in a while...

I read that Greg about the three day total..Just a figure of speech on my part..Greg..Hows the detector working with the replacement coil..Was that the issue....
are you getting better depth now..I sure hope so...

I have used the stock twice now and the 5.3... 3 times...will post a pic this weekend...Been out 5 straight days...should be able to add one more hunt tomorrow and then the cold weather kicks back in... The new stock coils does seen deeper getting hits up to now up to 6.5 inches...same as the 5.3 coil...I still prefer the 5.3 coil...no old finds but a couplr interesting things to include in post...

Gregg, if those 58-69 VDI's are deep, dig them. That's Indian territory. The zinc's on my machine are almost aways 62-64 and I pass on those unless it is pretty close to the surface. I'll pop those out with the probe, just because I have been surprised more than once with a ring find. Both, silver and junk, thinking it was just another zinc. My best +63, (Zinc) was a junk skull ring with a Gold chain attached.

Larry some of my cents are coming in as high as 79 and fooling me into thinking it is a dime or a wheatie....Should any of the cents be coming in that high...these are the copper cents not the stinky zincies...wonder if it is time for a recalibration again...

Some copper pennies read higher than others if you gather up a bunch and test them you should be able to notice that. I found that out while trying to see if I could eliminate digging them. The higher reading pennies will read very close to clad dimes, that is just my take on it. Of course soil conditions will factor in as well, moist soil will tend to cause pennies to read higher as well.....

The copper cents with little wear will often come in just under a dime, sometimes the same, for me anyway. What helps me is the cents will often bounce around a little bit, where a dime usually locks on.

thanks I have noticed the same...also my wheaties seem to bounce from 72 to 75 cto 79 also...which makes it hard to tell the wheaties from the bouncing coppers...

Yes I notice most of my dimes stick around 78..just makes it hard to pick out the bouncing wheaties...

Gregg, with your penny totals you should be digging those coppers. People are buying them on ebay for around $75 per $50 dollars worth. With the price of metal going up so high, copper might end up where silver is now. Nice 3 day totals too. Looks like your off to another great year.

To add the equation, there are lower reading dimes also. If I am in an area with little or no chance of silver and only clad hunting, I sometimes take the chance and only dig the higher conductive pennies and dimes, just going for quick change. If the coins are real shallow your chances are better too only taking out the higher reading ones however I still dug a good many pennies. I guess it is according to how many pennies are at a site and how much time one wants to invest. In more recent years, I have just dug all the conductors in the dime/penny range whether pennies or not.
