Is the backlight replaceable if it goes out? What
kind is it?

Ok a dumb question, yes its LCD with built in luminance when activated, but does any body know the technology behind it?

from my own observations It needs around 150volts a.c. to illuminate the phospher strip behind the lcd glass, that is generated by a special ic osc and choke on the main processor pcb, and theres no end user changeable bits inside the box unless you can get hold of a complete plug in meter modual of the same type.

Mike,
You can see a graph of the EL lamps light output with time for up to 10,000 hours constantly lit

I dont think your ever going wear it out with normal detecting somehow :) and its guaranteed for two years against failure.
