Nice digs. Wish I could find some V-nicks that looked like that...mine are all toast. About like most of the Indians I find. And the Large Cents. Our soil around here turns coins other than silver (and probably gold...couldn't tell ya) to crap. And we don't find stuff like that at the beach unless it's post-hurricane.

As for your quarter-sized copper, my first inclination was "Large Cent", but if it's the SAME SIZE it's not one. The LC is bigger. Does it look like this if you put the quarter on the LC? If so, then it's an LC.

Here's a link to the makers of the lock that the key belongs too.

Mike, Its the same size - exacly! -
like it came out of the same mold
There are no visable markings
Looks like a slug from an electrical box, only copper??

Do you find old coins in the surf -

if so - how do they hold to the salt water?

We don't get many old coins at Virginia Beach normally. There's a whole lot more beach that was man-made than there is natural and the older strata is way down below the new and far from the water. But there is the occasional wheatie and silver coin. And I have found many a '65 or '66 quarter. And after hurricane Isabel there were some silvers found at the beach...I found 17 myself and a couple buddies found maybe another 20 between them. I had Barber coins, Mercs, and Indians. Best was an 1895 Barber half. It was black, like most of the Mercs. Cleaned up real nice with electrolysis.

After cleaning...didn't get a "before" shot, but it was black.

And "after"...

That is amazing,if i had found that ring i would have thought "what a load of junk" but a good old clean just goes to show you it can be precious.
At first i thought the stone was missing but at a closer view the middle may be a feature am i right?

Well done i love the old stuff best.
