After many MANY years of no detecting, I looked around, researched, read this forum and others, talked to others and just got my new X Terra 705 this past Saturday. Want to know how long it's been? My detectors years ago were a White's Goldmaster and a White's Coinmaster 4! No discrimination, a big old control box and a straight handle that hurt your lower arm muscles after about a half hour:). Remember them?
So much of this terminology is foreign to me and I read my owner's manual over and over and think, "What the heck does that mean?" But, a trial run this past Sunday was at an old homestead with just the chimney left, an outline of the walls. It has to have been gone over many times. Top that off with the fact that it's a party area and I'm thinking, "This is a good test." Well, don't get me wrong. I'm not dissatisfied in any way-just know that I don't know what I'm doing. I only found a modern penny and got many signals which turned out to be pull tabs right under the leaf litter. May I ask this- I was in pattern #1 which I think should be very discriminatory against pull tabs, tin foil, etc.. But, when the junk is right on the surface, does it over ride the discrimination anyway?

Also, sometimes I got a signal but then did not on the next pass. Is that a ground balance situation? I know-I have tons of trial and error ahead of me. But, I am pleased with the light weight, the good reputation, and an unmatched 3 year warranty.

Although the detectors have changed a bit over the years (I've been detecting since 1972), the objective is the same! If you haven't read the FAQFAQ section at the top of this page, I'd suggest you look it over. Lots of interesting reading that should help get you started. Although I haven't had time to write a guide for the 705 yet, I did write a fairly comprehensive article on coinshooting with each of the prior X-Terras. Take a look at the one for the X-70 and know that most of that information applies to the 705. Pay close attention to the part about "consistency" as it will answer your question regarding a signal coming and going. As to your question regarding Pattern 1 and pulltabs....... Pattern one will not reject pulltabs. Pattern 2 will reject most of them. Take a look at page 23 of your manual and you will see what notch segments are included with each Pattern. And remember, those patterns can be adjusted to accept or reject any notch or combination of notches you desire. The best advice I can give you is to build yourself a test plot. Bury some coins, jewelry and trash at different depths and angles. Vary your sweep speed and learn what each one sounds like and how it appears on the display. Most of all, have fun! HH Randy
