My wife & I got home from New Mexico last night - been gone 3 days roaming around the desert. We hit some old RR sites, some parks & schools. Dug about 100 coins, some date nails, few marbles & a knife and spoon.

Here's the jewelry & such. The bracelet is stamped 925, the dime is a 1960 Roosevelt and the always present live bullets.

Here's a good shot of the barren New Mexico desert with the railroad trestle. Man do they need rainfall.

And lastly, what is this thing I dug ? It has a red glass "eye" on onne side and a clear one on the other. The bottom is pipe threaded. I seem to recall something like this on a bicycle. Any ideas ? Steve in so az

Nice finds to! WTG on the silver! :) I found one silmilar, thought it might go on an old car?

Think I have the answer on the 'thingy'.

I believe it is a part of a flashlight. the bulb screwed up inside the T with the red and clear lens so it had a red bright light in one direction and a white light in the other. Where the threads are is where the battery holder (with bulb) screwed into the T. I recall seeing something like that where it had an elastic band so it was attached to a bicyclist's leg so the red was to the back and the white to the front to alret motorists of something weird ahead. As the leg went up and down on the pedals so the light went up and down as well making it a lillte more obvious something was moving ahead.
Maybe there was something similar used for railroading but doesn't seem it is big enough for say a guy in the back to tell the engineer to go ahead or use the red to tell him to stop.

Ya know Steve I never left home and I'm broke too

Congrats on those finds. Must have been hot out there on the desert. So question - do you wear headphones while detecting out there? Just seems if you had headphones on ya might not hear the rattlesnake in the bushes shaking its tail. Just wondered.

Welcome home to you both.

That sounds plausible all right. It's a heavy item, and I dug it in a school yard so it wasn't a RR item - should have mentioned that.
With my earphones on I can still hear quite a bit. And when I am in snaky looking areas I leave one phone slightly off ear to hear. Matter of fact, I did come across a big rattler on the trip, I was without earphones at the time - they're out already. It was cool at night and not bad during the day. We were about 4500 ft up. steve

Wouldn't expect it to be a heavy item if used for bicycling. Maybe some other unknown but similar purpose - or maybe it is a turn signal off a UFO

Guess we will never know for sure.

Glad you practice safety around them snakes Steve. They aren't too friendly from what I hear.
