Back from the Beach and 6 hours with the 15X12 SEF

well I can say without hesitation this is the deepest seeking searchcoil I have ever used on a Sov. I dug several quarters and nickels in the 16-18" range and a toy truck at a depth I don't want to dig to again! :) This is an awesome coil but it is not without one little quirk. As with anything in detecting...nothing is perfect! :( I did not use the coil cover today and the one quirk with this coil is that if you place it on the beach and lift it up the detector makes a loud beep. Most coils will make some kind of small beep when you do this but this is a loud beep and a little annoying if you are digging a lot of targets and setting the coil down alot. What is interesting is that it is independent of the sensitivity setting. Even with the sensitivity set well below the normal level used for detecting it still did it. Also it will false when you first walk into the water with it. Once under the water it is fine. The coil is very stable on the wet sand and you can run the Sov with very high levels of Sensitivity with no falsing or false positive readings from iron. I was hunting most of the day at the 9:30-10 O'clock position with no trouble. As I said this is the deepest hunting Searchcoil I have used on a Sov to date and even with going extremely deep for coin sized targets it is still very capable on small targets and jewelry. Even after 6 hours of swinging this coil my arm really isn't sore. However the arm I use for digging is going in and out of charlie horses....ouch :(( :( :( :( Here are pix of today's finds with the 15X12 SEF. Just in case you were wondering the settings on my GT were Notch=0, Disc=0, Volume=Max, Threshold=barely audible, and Ironmask=Off. After 6 hours of hunting I did manage to find one gold Claddagh Ring and an old silver ring. Also found an kewl old Surfer's Medal and tiny religious medal. Also found an interesting Inspirational Medal. It gave a really low tone....thought it was going to be gold or foil...turned out to be neither :)

Nice digs man.

Like you, I mentioned that with the 10 x 12 SEF it falsed on going into the water, initially. And once under water, was fine. Unlike you, I didn't have the other issue...with the loud beep on lifting the coil. Maybe that's due to the smaller size. Or not...not sure.

They do go deep though!

It was only on lifting it from being in physical contact with the beach to the search height. Not if you already had it 1/2" off the beach and then lifted it up. It's an impressive coil and a little lighter than a WOT.

It's possible that it is being cause by the bottom of the coil coming in contact with the beach. They used a black resin when they made the coil and most epoxy resins use Graphite to make the resin black. Graphite is conductive and even when distributed through the resin it would still be semi-conductive which may create a weak electrical connection between the coil and the wet salt causing the momentary false. This would also explain the momentary false when the coil first enters the water. I will try measuring it with an ohm meter tomorrow.

i knew you'd like it

16-18" range, quite impressive. That would make that GT a very potent beach machine.

The GT has always been a very good beach machine as have all Sov's. As far as I am concerned the GT is the best Sov so far and the addition of this coil has only added to the GT's Beach capabilities!

I also have just try ed out a 15x12 SEF on the beach. I spent three days at Galveston ( East Beach Only ) and used the 15x12 for two

the last one with a eight in." coin search. The beaches there are very badly sanded in due to the storm surge from " IKE ". I try ed from

the waters edge to the upper edge of the wet sand. The setting used were; Notch= 0; Disc= 0 Vol. = max ( wind was 40/45 m.p.h. for two

days ) Threshold = barely audible; Iron Mask = on, GB = track, band one. I started by using Sens. in auto and had to cut back to 9 then 10

then 11 as I worked different areas. I think this was due to the way the storm has st ired the sand and it has not had time to really re- stratify.

The deepest targets found were no more than 10'' and only a few cans at around 12". Nothing the 8" coil would not find so far. I did have trouble

with the 15x12 not wanting to pinpoint the target AFTER it was out of the hole! It would just loose it unless I spread the sand out and even then

it did not want to hit on it really hard for some reason ( ????????? ) ( small targets only ). I did have trouble pinpointing targets be for digging until

I put my meter on and used the highest reading as pinpoint, this worked out very well so will continue this way. I didn't find the weight to bad but

I use it with a swingie thing to support it ( I HUNT HARD AND LONG WHEN I HUNT ) and any coil larger than 8" gets very heavy and hours the arm

after a long day. I don't think I will pass judgment on it yet; maybe after three or four trips and under several different area's. So far it has not

shown me any thing that any other large coil would not. Only time and more holes will.

I believe everyone should know the cable is short for hip mounting. Considering the price, another foot would have made things a lot easier.
I don't know if one comes with a longer cable but if you hip mount be forewarned.

I found cans and matchbox cars deeper than I care to dig and small bits and pieces of stuff. No gold yet but targets were few.
Definitely a keeper coil. Still no lightweight but about the same balance as the WOT.

I didn't have the falsing problem but I was running in auto sensitivity. I'll switch over to manual the next go round.

Checked the for resistance. There is none so the resin is not conductive at all. Since Donna didn't notice anything while running in Auto Sensitivity it's possible that I may have been running my sensitivity a little to hot for the conditions. Even so the coil went deep and worked extremely well.

Yeah, well I had mine at 12 noon and never tried it lower, so my light falsing going into and out of the water was probably from that too. Next time I'll drop to 1 PM and see how that does. I doubt it will lose much depth.

Excellent thread. Any other updates as I have a used 15x12 on the way this week. This is one of the many posts I've read about this coil that convinced me it was as deep or deeper than the WOT on coin/ring sized targets and also is better at pinpointing/seperation and runs smoother at higher sensitivity settings= more depth. Some opinions differed here and there but I'd say 90% said the 15x12 was better.

I've even dropped mine to 3 o'clock just to keep it from falsing, and it will still get great depth. I had my sensitivity almost in autotune a couple weekends ago, and it was buzzing smooth and steady

Any land hunters have any field reports on this coil? That's mainly what I'll be using it for in cleaner sites, though I hear it's got pretty good seperation for a large coil.
