Back from Gettysburg!!!

Wow... 484 new posts since I left :lol:

I'll try to keep this as short as I can but I think it'll be a long one :)

We stayed at a place that was built in 1800 or so and it was ON the Gettysburg battlefield but outside the National Park. Got there late last Thursday afternoon... It rained on Friday and Saturday morning and I didn't get a chance to ask the owner for permission to hunt until Saturday afternoon. It was a "good news / bad news" conversation. Good news was that I was given permission to hunt the entire property (except the fenced in portions). YES!!! The bad news was that the previous owner was a relic hunter. Worse than that, his metal detecting club hunted the entire property :) Oh well... I figured maybe they all missed something? :)

Let me tell you, it was hot, humid and very nasty out. I got out for about 2 hours Saturday night, Sunday morning / night and this morning. There were times I couldn't see anymore for all of the sweat in my eyes and my glasses fogging up. When I got back to my room, you could have rung out my t-shirt. There were a bunch of big thunder storms and LOTS of rain. That was real good because the ground when I got there was like concrete. The rains softened everything down to over 10".

As I expected, the previous owner and his club did a very good job of hunting the area :) But, I did find some interesting things; some stuff I need some help on for an ID:

One of the very first things I dug up was this button. I couldn't believe it!!! However, it didn't take long to figure out it looked TOO good :lol: Seems they must have had re-inactments on the property...

Here's another one... aside from the shape it was in, the fact that the Virginia button was "made in Connecticut" was a bit of a giveaway as to it's age :lol:

<img src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/toiceborn/GBVirginia.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com">

However, I did come across a button that I think might be legit... From what I can see, it looks like a Federal officer's button. It has 24 stars and the Eagle has 4 arrow in it's talons... What do you think???
<img src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y236/toiceborn/gbfedbutton1.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com">

Then there was this bullet... it's a small calliber. I put a penny next to it for scale. Any ideas as to what it is?

Also found this metal button that was down pretty deep... Did they make metal buttons then???

Lot's of other junk found and some clad... All in all we had a great time! We even made it to Antietam and Harpers Ferry. We've got tons of pictures! Eventually, Vicky will put together a web page of everything. I'll try to post some pics of where I was hunting.

Took a guide out in Gettysburg (Dave you were right! :) ) Learned a lot! We even walked out onto the field where Pickett made the charge on the 3rd day. Saw Little round top, devil's den, the wheat field, peach orchard... Geez, hard to conceive of how many were there and how many were lost.

Did the CD tour in Antientam. Wow, to look over the cornfield there sent a chill down my spine... Well, this is the short version. :)

Now I have to see if I can catch up on all the posts!

Nice finds!
What an opportunity you had! That is great!

Joe,

Wow, it sounds like a great time. You have some relics very few people can say they have, actually from Gettysburg!! That is awesome. The 3rd button looks like one I found that was identified as a General staff button.It looks legit. Check mine out for a comparison at: www.pbase.com/photodug. Click on metal detecting finds. I'm glad you and Vicky had a great time and a safe trip.

I want the long version! The bullet looks modern, the rusty button might be real, but the top two look like new? It is possible they are real, but I doubt it. I am just finishing a book about Gettysburg, and now I want to go there!

Joe, First of all, glad you enjoyed your trip. The bullet you dug is definitly modern. The four hole pewter button may be CW period for the did make drawer buttons like that. The general staff officers button looks real. The other two look good, but only the back marks will tell the real story. Post the back marks on all, and I'll let you know. The memories will last, regardless of whether they are real or not.

Well I guess you have all the answers already so I wont add . You got some very nice items - too bad it was so humid. Steve in so az

I knew the other two were reproductions... They looked too good :) The Virginia button was made in Connecticut so that was an easy clue :lol:

Hey, at least I'm pretty sure I got one good one! My first!

Man, I can't even begin to describe how brutal it was out there. Low 90's and the humidity had to be in the 80's. Hey, at least I got to hunt Gettysburg. Too bad so many people had hit it before me :) I just dug anything that even remotely sounded like a target :) I had to laugh when I got the two reproductions, especially the Virginia button that was made in Connecticut :lol: But you should have seen my face when I found the one I think is real. Woo Hoo!

The bullet was interesting... I noticed the crimp marks too. The odd thing about the bullet was there was no pin at the bottom (if that's what you call it).

Didn't find a heck of a lot but I had a great time all the same :)
