Back from a weekend hunt.

The journey most of the time is more important than the destination.I was able to search some interesting sites even with our bad planning. One place my brother Kevin and I hunted was a modern middle school with a huge 25 acre field with older trees bordering the Kanawha River north of Belle WV.My brother told me the building is too new to produce any old coins. We found an old rusted baseball back stop with a rotted bench the hunt was on.We found lots of clad no wheat's and the ground was dry and hard to dig.My parents moved from West Virginia to Michigan when I was twelve and I'm eight years older than my brother.Anyway I told my brother I've been here before. When I was about seven years old mom took me and my other two brothers to this huge amusement park on this road and it had a miniature train that ran the perimeter. Some lady was walking by and I asked about the history of this ground location. The old gal lived here all her life and said there was a park here Joyride Park from 1957-1962 and was shut down because some kid was killed by the train. So flash back to a small kid here lots of people thousands and all kinds of rides amusement park activities I remembered I told my brother. My brother said there isn't that many people in this stinking county, but there was a lot I explained so there has to be some nice finds here.Anyway at this site no silver on this hunt, but we agreed it had possibilities. Off to another location.

Thanks for the post and best of luck on your next ROAD TRIP.

Road trips are the best. Thanks for sharing yours.

Another site,I have drove by this park that could be seen from Interstate 77 while driving trips back and fourth from Michigan to Virginia. The park is in Dunbar just north of Charleston.Very hot in our room at the hotel in Kanawha City at MacCorkle Ave and was kept ice cold with the Air conditioner on max. My brother and I loaded the Sovereign's up and headed for the park about 20 minutes to the north.Anyway when we were driving a side street to get to the park we got lost and got directions and came in from the back of the park. The park was old very nice big trees and well kept lawns post card look for a hunter's paradise. When we pulled to the front entrance of Shawnee park we saw Historical signs and my brother pointed out a mound from The Mound Builder's.My brother said the other side of the park was far away from the historical site and wanted to hunt.I told my brother we shouldn't even be here with the detectors in the jeep. This site was definitely crossed off of the list.

Going East about 5 miles from Cabin Creek WV is the old Eastbank Football and track stadium.Very old football field people my parents age went to this school.Eastbank most famous sports figure Jerry West ended up playing for the LA Lakers and for years managed the Laker's team. Most people know him from the silhouette on the NBA back board.Anyway hunted for a couple of hours very hot found a lot of deep clad dimes and almost ever signal was a quarter.Neither Sovereign user found a wheat or silver. The ground was dry and very difficult to dig even though the field was right next to the Kanawha River. On to another location.

Thank's Ron for the good story. I wish more people would post stories and pictures of there find's, the forum is getting a little technical. I myself haven't been out for a few weeks but I went by an old park today that look's real interesting, big tree's and on old gazeebo, can't wait.

Gary, the story is far from over. I'm going to give an anatomy of a weekend hunt.Yes we did have a couple of bad sites and hunts but we did find one good park that was worth the whole trip.

There is an older popular park in the area and I'm not going to give away but will say its by an Airport named after a guy who broke the sound barrier.I went to this park as a very young child and knew what changes was made in the last fifty years. My brother Kevin and I found some very old stone fence markers and started to work the area.Hot and humid but I felt this was going to be the place to search. Both of us on a dry spell with silver maybe today we have luck with us.Anyway the grass was still damp enough to give away a shoe foot print and I started to work a search grid.Still early in the day very quiet not a lot of people in the park I could see one older gal running on the road up the hill.I could hear my brother's Elite zinging away and yelled over to him why don't you use your headphones you're going to get us kicked out of the park people come here to relax and enjoy the peace and quite I explained. My brothers reply I like hunting without headphone well at least stay your distance and around people use them anyway. As the hunt goes on we were find wheat's in the 40s 6-7 inches this park has been hit before but still nice.Between both of us we had six wheat's heck I don't keep score 4 to 2 I'm winning and stats are saying silver soon. After another fifteen minutes a nice signal with a 180 on the wiggle a plug and more dirt remove the S-1 gave a high zing and could see the silver no mistake. The coin a 1940 Mercury any silver is good.My brother and I found a couple more wheat's and needed a water break and grabbed some drinks out of the cooler we swapped war stories and decided to search another area of the park. The next area was by a shelter out of way back on a hill. There was sunken steps and field stone. Our last search here lasted for another hour I retrieved a 1961 Roosevelt and couple of wheat's.My brother a 1927 Lynburg token and a 1914 wheat penny. We were going to meet my cousin and go to some of his sites. So back to the hotel to regroup more Ice and drinks. And then to meet Owen.

My original plan was to go to Coal River for a family reunion my gram pal relatives on my dads side. The trip from MI to Kanawha WV 6am to 2pm drive meet up with my brother from Roanoke and metal detect some sites. After the first two sites we were back at the hotel and I explained to Kevin I would make Sunday School services in the Cabin Creek area and then head over to Coal River. My brother said heck tomorrow let's skip church services and the family reunion.LOL his point you haven't been to that church in years and people change, they might drop a bag of snakes in your lap.Another point gram pal was dead way before any of us was born and we never socialized with this side so why see these people now.Well he did make a point so we would hit the airport park first and then meet up with our Cousin Owen he lived in Michigan and retired in West Virgina.Besides Owen and I bought metal detectors back in 1970 from Joe's Army Surplus he got the Treasure Hawk and I the Hunt master.Don't laugh found a lot of silver with that BFO.Kinda of like a family reunion two brothers and a cousin metal detecting.Anyway went metal detecting instead.

Sounds like youve got a great summer and fall lined up in front of you. Enjoy it for all it offers:thumbup:

I just kayaking again, havent picked up a detector in two weeks:thumbup:

Good story. I too would like to hear more field stories as well as see people mention how their finds are going. With all the activity showing views of threads in this forum it's appearant that there are a lot of Sovereign owners who like staying low profile. Must be the machine. That concerns me, because if I was detector shopping and was judging finds by the posts in forums I would put the Sovereign at the bottom of the list, and we all KNOW it's right at the top with it's ability to find the good stuff that other detectors have missed.

After the park hunt we went to Owens house at Dawes up Cabin Creek Hollow(Hollar).Owen just got back from a military memorial service and said we can put the detectors in his SUV but would have to remove some rifles. He said he was just got pulled over by the State Police and was asked if there was any firearms in the car.Owen told the officer 7 M14s with 7 Marines and his personal carry pistol.Anyway the officer said have a good service. The rifles had blanks I ask Owen if the 21 gun salute sounded like one shot, which he said heck no! some of the Marine vets were pretty old.Owen was telling me that the old Grade School Sharon Dawes yielded a lot of mercury dimes on one of his previous hunts. My cousin used a Bounty Hunter 202 and was happy with the detector.Instead of going to a Charleston city park we decided to detect this schrool about a half mile away.Once to the school Owen showed us the area where he found the silver dimes and the hunt began. The ground was easy to dig here lots of deep clad.I looked over at the ball field, which was in a different corner than when I was a twelve year old pitcher for our little league team. The two Sovereigns found no wheat's or silver not a lot of trash and most clad coins were 5-6 inches. The Bounty Hunter 202 did well with a lot of clad finds as well.Must have been 95 degrees and sunny after about an hour and half hour hunt we ended up in the shade and swapped stories about current politics and family. So in a way I did end up in a family reunion. We drove back to Owens place and he wanted to take his Kubota 4 wheeler up Dawes hollow to show my brother and I old house foundations. The Kubota was a nice ride and after a while came to the foundations. We had to walk a cross a small creek on moss covered rocks one slip and good by Sovereign.Anyway one foundation had the chimney still intact and stood about 12 feet high. The site was over grown with weeds lots of snakes here and decided this would be a great fall hunt area. The tour ended and my we loaded the Sovereigns back in the Jeep and headed back to the Red Roof Inn in Kanawha City just south of Charleston.

After the search at Sharon Dawes Elementary School and the tour of the old house foundations up Dawes Hollow back to Kanawha City to regroup.Only finest food places for this hunt team LOL a Windy's Double combo for dinner Fast food place in the Red Roof Inns parking lot) and then the detectors were unloaded in the hotel room.Kevin went to the Greyhound Dog racetrack 20 minutes north on 77 to play blackjack.I play blackjack also but chose to play it safe and stay in Kanawha City watch TV relax and hit the sack.Around midnight called my brother to see if he was alright.Kevin said he was 350.00 ahead. I reminded him once the loosing starts its quick so quit while you are ahead, besides lets get one more hunt in at the Yeager Park.Kevin came in late and said that after our conversation he started to loose but walked away with 250.00 and took my advice.Just like the John Denver song always good to get back home again after breakfast I was eager to pack and hit the road.I met my brother over at the lobby to pay for the two night stay at the Red Roof Inn a split cost came to 64.00 not bad. At the park with both vehicles I could start transferring my brothers equipment from my Wrangler to his Soltist no trunk space in the little Pontiac two seat er.The place we chose to hunt was near a shelter far back on a hill. The old tree where I hunted had a lot of trash and hard ground to dig in.I had a good 180 lock with a wiggle and lost the target after digging down about a foot.My brother waved for me to come over and see his first silver a 1918s Mercury Head.I found another wheat in the forties and again my brother was holding up his arm waving me to come over.Second silver for the Elite a 1916 Barb dime.My brother switched to the Tornado 800 coil for this hunt, which he said helped for the thrash. The search finished after an hour or so my brother got his silver. On the way back to the cars we both agreed this park should have been the place we hunted for the entire trip. After a 10 minute drive we came to Interstate 77.As I turned right to go north to Michigan he was headed back to Virginia.By the way I did put the John Denver CD in and played Almost Heaven West Virginia.

Great reading Ron. I wish more people would share their hunting experiences with the Sovereigns. I love reading the stories behind the finds as opposed to just pictures. I'm guilty myself but I only type with two fingers and one of them is dyslexic and the other can't spell so I try to keep things short.
