Back at it.....

Well, after a year off from detecting I was back at it on Friday (The wife and kids went shopping :stretcher:. better them than me!) I had to unfortunately part ways with the V3i so in order to detect I have to rely on my back-up unit as my primary which is the White's Classic ID. (The funny thing about detectors...once you own a few of the higher tech ones that can truly punch down deep, it's VERY hard to go back to the beginner models. Having said this, I do know that I am Blessed to HAVE a detector, a great area to go detect and the health to enjoy the hobby which makes it all worth while!)...

I'm now back on first shift and conjured up the gumption to ask my Pastor to detect his cornfield last weekend. He said, "sure Greg, no problem. I've got a little over 150 acres so have fun". Needless to say I started to get excited. (Why I do this to myself I have no idea...) After reading all of the W&ET magazines for the past 30+ years with people doing well in cornfields I thought this would be the perfect place to start back up after my year hiatus. I figured since I have an older machine that can get about 6" in the dry clay here I'd be doing ok in a cornfield that is tilled regularly and hopefully there would be more shallow objects. Silly me :surrender: After 6 hours of detecting I think I pulled every piece of rusted iron out of that cornfield. (Or at least the 1/8 acre I covered) I tried to stay positive and I kept thinking to myself, "Hey, you're doing yourself a favor for the next time you come!" :pulltab:

Now, I'm not sure if any of you have ever tried detecting in a cornfield, but having been my first time I wasn't shocked with all the rusted tractor parts or can-slaw, but what surprised me the most were the 5 shotgun shells I popped out. (My Army and hunting days are long gone so I was a little baffled of why I dug so many in the MIDDLE of the cornfield. I can understand all the shells near the tree lines, but who knows. I guess maybe corn can get a little out of control down here, I don't know.)

While I've been gone I've gotten very familiar with Google Earth and overlays and I've done a little tinkering with a free website through "Weebly". I purchased a domain name back in the day for 10 years and since it isn't doing anything and Weebly offers free hosting, I figured what the heck. So I put together a website that no one is going to trip over, but it allows me to give cards to someone in case they have lost something, or can tell a friend or a relative. The website is www.javeg.com. Again, it's free and they offer some really nice out-of-the-box websites that you can tweak if you are good with design. I offer the service to people locally for free in case someone DOES stumble upon it.

As you can see by the pic on the right, my big find for the day was a 1982 Lincoln penny. (Hey, at least I didn't get skunked!) Well, I hope all of you had a great and safe Thanksgiving and it's good to see all the familiar faces on the forum! Thanks for reading and have a Blessed week!

Whether we find anything or not, it's always a blessing to be out digging. Glad you could get out Sgt..
