I received my Safari on Friday. I put it together and took it outside for a test run and the numbers were jumping all over the place. The Safari was also talking in atleast six different languages at the same time. It was a scarry time. I started wondering about this new detector. Then I started reading all the post's on here. I found one post that talked about setting the Safari up in a custom mode as suggested in Andy's book. The "cross saving" feauture was also suggested for best results. I performed the cross saving feature. Then I sat up the custom mode as was suggested. This afternoon I went out on a Safari. It was really a joy. I could actually understand most of the things she was telling me. After I run in this mode for awhile, I will move on and become more adventureous. I am listing below the great ideas that I follwed. Thanks to whoever listed them. I am also listing my first finds. There were alot of old bullets from an old military base.

Cross Saving

Where did you find the rounds? And you didn't tell me.... Good job.

Can you expalin that cross saving a little more..Tin foil told me how to do it..one time on the phone..but now I can't seem to redo it..What does this accomplish for coin detecting..Sorry to sound so dumb.".Well not really"..LOL I am dumb (LOL) Only had this Safari a few days....Thanks

Dale thanks for the posts. Because of you I took a baby step today. I finished reading Andy's book. Went to the beach this morning and rejected -10 to +7 in coin/jewelry mode and it was a good hunt. Dug 10 coins, 5 bottle caps, 1 bobby pin. I was the only one out there on the beach. We are not even close to beach weather yet. It is 50 and over cast today. The Safari has found over 200 coins on the beach so far. I am really looking forward to when the people come back to the beach this summer......Z

Thanks for the great report. The Safari is a great unit. It is different than the X-Terra 70 I use to use for my main detector. But, long term I believe it will find me alot more good stuff. Thanks again!

I Just started tinkering with mine... Today I threw a dime in the yard.. I attempted to located it with the Safari .. I had a good idea about where the dime landed.. I could not find the dime... The machine was chattering all over the place... I pulled out my ace 250 and found that dime within seconds of where I thought it was.. I cant understand why this Safari is chattering soo much... I even turned the sensitivity way down and it still chatters over areas of the yard that I know there is no metal... This machine is not user friendly..

I think the biggest mistake Minelab made was advertising this as a "turn and go" machine. It is not IMO. Once I got the settings to where I needed them it's a joy to use, but when I first got it I was perplexed. But with anything be it a detector or new fishing reel it takes some time and effort to get coomfortable with it, you just have to use it, dig stuff and remember what you see and hear. JB when i first got my Safari I could've just used my Cibola and found coins easier too, but only because I was used to that machine. I guarantee I could find that dime with my safari just as quickly as you could with your ace 250, but only because I know what to listen for, keep at it, after a month of use the machine will start to make sense.

Are you absolutely sure that the safari is chattering? I have used mine in almost every situation from relics to beaches and back. Never did I get chatter. I did however get many different tones and beeps. I have to agree with Fog it is not really a touch and go (until you learn it). I did have one problem recently...
My gramma lost her wedding band in a little flower garden around a steel light pole in her yard. I set my safari to reject everything with the exception of gold rings. I put my wedding band on the ground to make sure it was consistant. When I detected in the little garden maybe a 3-4 ft circle, I didn't get any hits. I was figuring she must have lost the ring in the house. Well, I put my ring in the garden and a foot or so away from the pole ran the coil over it and nothing, no sound, no beep, no nothing. I did this several times within the garden still nothing. When I moved the ring farther away from the pole the safari picked it up. Long story short, if her ring is in there I'm going to have to find it with maybe another detector with a smaller coil. If anyone has any suggestions (nothing outrageous PLEASE) let me know. Even with the safari that close to the pole there was still no chatter. JB, Please don't get me wrong !! I am not saying that your machine isn't getting chatter. Your situation may be different from alot of others. Make sure you are doing everything according to the manual ( I will probably get some love letters from that statement) and then if you are still getting chatter, it could be a defective machine. These things do happen and that is why there are warrantees and technichians. If you are able to start getting some chatter free detecting in, then hang in there and stick it out!!! I think once you learn the machine you will really appreciate it. Take a little time to go back to some earlier posts lets say from early March to present. By doing some reading and of course using your machine you can and will get a feel for this thing. I hope you do well. Hope this helped!!! Ron :detecting:
