baby Humming birds

we have a lot of them but I have never seen a darned nest!!

I love Humming birds it took a while before I could ever get them to show up and when they did they were like flies, everywhere. There was this one big bully who would not let the others feed. I ended up having to put out two more feeders. This guy was mean, he would run all the other ones away from the feeder. I mostly have doves and cardinals now. With a few other seed eaters. The vermin keep my feeder cleaned out so mostly now its ground feeders and feeding. I usually have 20-35 doves in the AM and early PM. I did see a cat take a dove down a few days ago, poor thing. Cats got to eat to I guess, Nice find with the baby Hummers.. Keep the feeder out and they will stay around. I use 1cup water and 1cup sugar, desolve it and its a feast. Good luck. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie,
We keep one in the back yard and they DO love to chase each other. The nest was found down the road by watching ahead as I walked. I could see the Mom take off when I was 300' away. A week b4 this, they were little black gobs. <img src="/metal/html/shocked.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":shock">

They hide/camouflage the nests so well, you can't see them when you're 5' away. I watch for them to fly out of the pines/firs. They love needled trees and use lyken(?) to cover it when possible. They like to build facing the s/e.

lint from a dryer out in the spring, they will use it for nesting material and it shows up much easier. I don't know if that would put them in danger from hummer-eaters but I rely on their judgement.
I am gonna try it next spring

I have wind chimes hanging from my deck.Early March 2004, a mamma began building a nest on one of my chimes, a very small chime. Its only 7 ft. from my front door so I've been able to watch it constently.I feel very honored.A baby was born March 22nd,no bigger than an eraser on a pencil.Mamma comes & feeds when I'm sitting about 3 ft. away. Baby is getting big now & is almost ready to leave the nest(I heard when they were 24 days old they leave)It has been so interesting & the topic of conversation.Hopefully it will return next year.
