Babb's Scoop

SurfPro

New member
Greetings,
I purchased a Babb's scoop and have been using it for about a year. The scoop is very strong, that's what I need since I'm mainly in the water. My only complaint is that it leeches a black film that tuns my clothes, hands, forearms and anything else that I touch black. I'm definitely no priss but I'm kinda getting sick of it. Anyone else, or am I the only one?

I've had no problem with mine. I rinse my scoop off with freshwater after each hunter when I'm rinsing down my detector. I wear nitrile gloves as well so if there was a little oxidization it wouldn't show up on my hands. I've had my Babb's scoop for 2 years now and it's still going strong despite all of the abuse I put it through.

Cheers,

BDA

Yes I have had this, it is a chemical reaction oxidizing Aluminum forming Aluminum Oxide usually when it comes in contact with another metal eg... iron, tin or copper. It can be removed from clothing but is a nuisance. All my scoops have produced this in salt water, not just a babb scoop. Look at other peoples scoops most will have tape or other material covering area. me I put Herculiner on the scoop where I grab, but gets hot sometimes in the sun, did not think it all the way through, oh well.

Cant find a better scoop.

Thanks for the responses, it sounds as though there's nothing to be done, maybe I'll paint it. I just loaded the truck and my wife and I are off to Santa Monica Beach., yesterday a gut mentioned that he lost a ring...

It is because of aluminum.

Babbs and Diamond are the best now. Until finally I will show mine when in my opinion after all tests it is ready to be offered to sale.

Even now, when it is still not perfect in my opinion I use it only, having Babbs and Diamond as an excellent reserve.

I expect to get a pilot shipment of ten scoops from Eastern Europe in two months. To manufacture a scoop to my design in this country would be prohibitevely expensive.

Just on little nice improvements and upgrades on my current one I already spent roughly $250.

I've had the same "Black Hands" thing when hunting in water. It's tough to scrub off the hands and it gets on the edges of my swim trunks or shorts pockets as I put finds in there. I painted my basket and used electrical tape tightly wound on the handle. I haven't used it yet so I'll have to wait and see.

I wonder if powder coating would do the trick? Although it might add weight, and cost a bunch.

one I made of aluminum. I have never had this problem, but I always rinse mine with fresh water after use to prevent futher reaction from the salt. Maybe that's the answer. Don't know otherwise.

Yeah! Have the same problem. When hunting and I see my hand turning black, I rub wet sand up and down the shaft to clean it the shaft, then I rub my hand with wet sand in it on the basket to clean my hand. Helps.

I just put an aluminum handle on my old scoop to reduce weight.

I sprayed it with truck bed liner to stop the oxidation and for a better gripping non-slip surface.

Works well, but the coating has chipped in a few spots after one use. It should be fairly easy to touch up tho.

A little oxidation may help the coating to stick better.

I put a foot long piece of foam noodle over it with tape and glue (GOOP) to float the handle and I may tape it too if the chipping is enough of a problem

I've been wrapping mine with rubber electrical splicing tape. Its a rubber tape thats not sticky but self adheres and stretches when you put it on. I half wrap mine starting about 3/4 down the scoop and go towards the handle. That way it give you ridges and helps you to grip alot better with wet hands. I think you can only get it at electrical supply houses. It comes in 1 1/2 or 2 inch width ,works great no more black paws.

Shrink tube is a plastic coating that is meant for electrical insulation. It comes in various sizes i know it goes up to 1 ". You place it over the handle, it is a loose fit and apply a mild heat (Boiling Water), It Will shrink tight against the aluminium handle, It is available in different colours but most commonly in yellow

I sanded mine with a 400 grit sand paper and painted it 18 months ago and it still holds the paint. Just used cheap wal-mart paint. Less than $2.00 to fix.

Trouble is the shafts are 1" or an 1 1/4" it might be tough getting it on.
