Set the Discriminate control at the absolute minimum setting.

Set the Sensitivity control as high as possible w/o falsing noise when the coil is held near the ground at search height.

Adjust for a 'proper' slight audio Threshold hum.

Ground Balance in the All Metal mode to be 'spot-on' and not positive.

Make sure you have mounted the most efficient search coil for the site, such as a stock 8" Concentric for open areas with limited trash, or a smaller, thin-profile 6" Concentric coil (they call it a 5.75) when hunting in trashier sites, confined areas, close to fences and metal structures, etc..

Begin searching, maintaining a coil position ±1" or so off the ground, using a slow and methodical side-to-side sweep, and remember to overlap your sweeps.

Have fun, enjoy using one of Tesoro's best all-purpose detectors, and keep us posted on how you do.

Monte, when you said all metal do you mean not using the auto retune all metal?
I always used the auto on my outlaw and B2micromax (retune on the b2)

very surprised by the depth of this machine... I will have to do some real world hunting, but in my test bed I am hitting a quarter @ 10", with a pretty solid tone... I am surprised by that, who knows what my results will be out in the world, my test bed is only a couple of months old,..... but very well packed.

The option for static All Metal w/manual Retune or to use Auto-Tune in All Metal is a personal choice. I am fine for general hunting with my original Bandido that lacks a toggle selection and has a slow or moderate auto-tune speed. The Bandido II and Bandido II microMAX do provide the Manual or Auto retune option, and I would guess 80%-90% of my searches with my Bandido II µMAX are in Auto-Tune function.

My reference in that reply was this:

That was simple set-up instruction for initial controls and establishing a functional Ground Balance, which for most people is easier to do in the Threshold-based All Metal mode. Auto-Tune might seem easier, but either that or Normal (Manual) Re-Tune will work fine.

Looking back, however, I note that I continued:

For that I forgot to add to begin searching in the silent-search Discriminate mode. That is the primary search mode most often used so I didn't address that in my quick reply.

So to clarify, I'll correct it to this:

Begin searching once adjusted and Ground Balance using:

a.. The silent-search motion-based Discriminate mode, using the minimum Disc. setting to reject most ferrous trash.

b.. The Threshold-based All Metal mode. Until you master using the All Metal mode in the 'static' behavior on the Normal setting and manually Re-Tuning, it might be easier to select the Auto-Tune All Metal mode option. Note that in Auto-Tune the search coil must be in motion and can not be held steady over a target like in Normal because it is a very fast auto-tuning speed and will quickly restore/reset to the Threshold setting. My most used preference is the 'Auto' setting.

I hope that answers your question, but my initial reply was simple to be sure to establish a proper Ground Balance.

Monte

Oh ok. Yeah I use the auto retune to balance. It does retune fast but you only need the initial sound change to know if youre negative or positive, but I'll try using the all metal (no motion).
Thanks Monte!!!

P.s. did you ever try the little brother the outlaw?
Different but the same in a weird way.

I use auto also its easier to balance or quicker for me..

Tesoro's would not be my 1st pick of detector to use in AM but they do work.

Want to trade a Troy Dhaw X2 for Bandido 2 Umax

I also ground balance my Tesoros in the "auto" AM when I get to a location, especially one I haven't been to. Throughout my hunt though, just bobbing the coil in disc mode will tell me if it's positive (silent) or negative (talks to you), and I adjust accordingly so that it just barely talks whille "bobbing", yet is silent on the swing. A little talkitive in small hot rocks is OK, as they don't sound like good targets. If you try to quiet the small hot rocks, you can end up being too positive and risk losing depth and good target response on larger coins.

Herb,I used one for years relic hunting, one of the hottest detectors
on civil war buttons I ever used, but I had the Troy 9" Super Coil
on mine and it went deep, but them coils are hard to find now.You
got it for a good price and one of the best detectors made.

:)
This thread makes me a proud owner of one.
I got lucky finding mine in the condition it was in. I love that little guy

@ stoof-tabsallday... how do you like the 4" as opposed to the 5.75" on the B2uMax? which coil is your favorite for that rig?

Well favorite has more to do with type of area I'm hunting. Very rarely do I find a site littered enough to use the 4" coil. But in trashy areas I like the 5.75 and will be trying the new 7" precision coil from my Mojave as well. But normally I just run the 8" on it.

i
have zero
experience with an X2, and can find very little about it. but i
do know that i have really enjoyed the B2uMax.... still learning it... it will be a while
before I consider letting it go... if i ever decide to part with it, ill let you know.

Awesome and happy hunting!!!
That machine is truly special. Really something else and the audio is fantastic!!

yeah the 8" seems fine for most of my needs so far.... i plan on hunying an early 1800's house on the. banks of the mississippi river this week... its all virgin, never been worked, and it was used as a hospital during the covil war... its gonna be a good week.

Heck yeah it is!!
That's some choice ground!!
Gonna take you a while to work through that!!

I'm looking forward to hearing how this goes. Take some pictures.
