B&O Rail piece found today

Found this cool piece about 200 ft away from the original track way that was done roughly 1850 in the town near where I live, close to Ottawa. It was down about 8 inches in a very sandy soil along with what looks like old whiskey barrel stays. The stamp is on both sides, it looks to be cast iron, that definitely broke off. I also thought it was odd for it only to have 1 R versus 2.

Any idea of what part of the train and or railway fixtures this would be off. Thanks. Cheers and hh.

Just found it was a Canadian Company started in the mid 1800's and competed with Grand Trunk Railway, Brockville & Ottawa Railway. Still not sure what or where it's from, any ideas anyone?

I like anything railroad related, but can't ID that item.

No idea but it is quite interesting. Man you are in some good detecting country. It may be to your benefit to do some serious research on the region this winter. As I'm sure you already know, the rivers were the highways back in the day.

Thanks everyone for your posts, UN, thanks and yes it is great here, thats why I try to get out everyday, took today off and had a afternoon nap lol. I did that last winter with researching the area and it'll be the same this winter. if you ever get out this way, let me know and I'll take you to some pretty cool places with good history. Cheers an hh.

 I did no research this past winter as I was relying on one field to be pretty reliable. So I boogered myself when that field was wheat stubble. I'm going for it this winter. It is time to hit the books again.

I need to get back over to the university library and hit it hard, too. They have a pretty good 'Treasure Room' full of books that can't be checked out, so 'ya just have to camp out for a few hours and skim through. Time well spent, though!

lol reminds me of one of the best movies ever, comedy wise, Rodney Dangerfield in "Back To School", gotta love that show. cheers and happy reading.
