Aztec type faced item

Hi there. I hope you can help identify this item from the photos i have attached.
This was found by my father-in-law.
The front is as you see it. The back has fine vertical lines, it also has a raised area with a bit of rusted iron behind it, as if it was attached to something iron. It also looks as if the back was covered with a fine layer of gold. It is quite heavy for it's size and made of silver gilt or a silver alloy.. It is also about 2-3 mm thick..
If you need a better description i'll ask him to describe it a bit better.
