Awkward Question...

We know its not cool to hunt in a graveyard, but it is ok to hunt on a battlefield, assuming its on open land and not protected by the Govt. So.. is it ok to hunt along the road where there is a cross at the location of a traffic accident?
Anybody ever do this? or is it not cool either? What are your thoughts?

I have gotten permission from pastors that live on church property to detect anywhere, even at the sides of the graveyards but not over and amongst the headstones. One pastor asked the committee what their thoughts were about detecting church property and they said have at it, just be tidy.
The crosses at the side of the road are a sad reminder of loved ones lost. I'd stay at least 50 yards or more away just out of respect.

:shrug:This is just an opinion on my part....

I don't think it matters on what we as detectorists think..............

What does matter is what the general public thinks of our actions. Anything that would be viewed as an issues with the non detecting public should be considered as a red flag.

Battlefields have generally been pretty accepted. It has been viewed as preservation on historical events.. Cemeteries in most peoples minds are a sacred area, and the utmost of respect is expected.
Detecting a cemetery could be viewed as disrespectful. I would not do it.

Marked Accident sites, Crosses/Flowers are a memorial for the dead..... Should be respected in my opinion.. Plus I'm not seeing what you expect to find there either... car parts ??
The chances of anything valuable would be so slim it isn't worth the negative viewing of the general public. Next we would all be following ambulances to accident sites... Just saying !!

This is just an excersize in thought...purely for discussion on how we are engaged in searching for items lost sometimes in tragic ways...Theres several crosses on some of the beaches I hunt where somebody lost their life in the surf, yet the public doesn't treat the area as a sacred location, ..Theres several little homemade memorials in some parks I go to where somebody got killed by gunfire...yet nobody hangs their heads humbly and quietly walks past, just daily life going on... So, its odd that certain areas seem to hold more feelings of reverence than others...?

Agree.

The funny thing is eventually we will have to step around the crosses, if we place them everywhere someone dies. Its kinda odd to me. Not trying to be insensitive just realistic. The person died a tragic death, they are gone and have a proper burial anyway right?

There is good reason to hunt near a memorial placed in a park of on a beach. They are in well traveled areas. On the side of a road, not so much. Now if there was a historical reason to be hunting right there, then probably less of an issue to me. However it is still out there in the vast public eye and could be seen as taboo (?). Not sure I would, unless there was a real good reason.

Whenever we find something, dont we all think about WHO was this person? Would we have been friends? What were the circumstances involved in the loss? Heres some pics of a memorial left on one of the beaches last summer. The write up in the paper gave some details about the guy, and what transpired. I will always wonder if I find a ring out there if it was associated with this event. When somebody drowns out here, seems everybody holds hands and goes out into the surf to try to locate the person, sometimes theres over 100 people holding hands out in heavy surf, typically a furious rip or undertow, looking for somebody. The cross is gone now, washed out by the winter storms, but now in the early morning when I'm down there alone, I cant help but think about the guy, several other people over the years, two of my cousins and countless others whe have met their end in this Lake. I think about that whenever I see a cross along the road as well, what happened here? Could I have made a difference if I was here at the time? Detecting puts us in touch with the past event, makes us a part of it, whether its a 2000 yr old roman coin, a minie ball, or just some clad. Something happened here, and now I'm a part of it.

Your obviously a very caring person who has deep feelings for people. I commend you mudpuppy.
If you feel what you do is helpful then by all means follow your heart Sir... Just try and consider what others are feeling too.

Your a good man !! I would be proud to be your friend if we lived in the same area...

That's where research comes in. I once hunted a spot where a soda truck overturned with coin vending machines. This came by word of mouth.

Hey Slingshot, once when we were kids, a Hostess fruit pie truck went off the bridge in the winter, and busted up all over the ice like a giant pie pinata! All of us kids ate real good for several months!

Ate so much Candy.Sometimes still get a little upset stomach feeling just thinking about it..
We ate stashed candy for a month LOL

Those roadside memorials should be illegal! They are everywhere,
No Bodies!
No Bones!
Maybe a few car parts!
If a person has the right to put them on the property that they don't own, then we should have the right to hunt them. Myself I don't see that there would be anything interesting to hunt for.
And there isn't any reason no to hunt graveyards other than permission, now I don't think it would be a good idea to use large digging tools or relic hunt, but other than that I don't see a problem with it. Be neat!, fill the holes, take the trash with you.

Thankfully most detectorists do not hold the same view...

OK. I used to ride a bicycle all the time. I used to find tools, cash, jewelry and wallets while going down the roads. One wallet I found had $100 in a hidden pocket that someone must have overlooked. Must've been there for a while as it was a silver certificate note. This is a personal favorite of mine. A couple of wallets I did return (had ID's inside) the story was the same-" I put it on top of my car and forgot about it."

Your really not going to bother the dead! and I also said "With Permission" Also, those that I have known that hunted graveyards usually hunts around the graves, not over top of them. And I doubt if its even possible to hunt those MAIN very large graveyards, the ones that is the more likely to get permission to hunt are the off the beaten trail smaller country ones.
