Automax Precision V2 Pinpointer over a Sunray X-1 ?

Yeah, about $150! BUT, you get what you pay for.
I use the Automax V2 right now, and it does pretty good. About an inch sensitivity, HOWEVER, this is where the problem comes in.
The Automax is an ALL METAL sensing instrument, and if you are trying to find that hidden coin in the hole that has other metal fragments, it can be a little irritating, as the Automax will buzz (or vibrate) at the presence of ANY metal. With the Sunray X-1 probe, it is actually a secondary 1' coil with ALL the discrimination modes of your Explorer at the flick of the switch. I hear it has about 2" to 3" of sensitivity, and it will IGNORE the trash in the hole if you have it discrimmed out on your Explorer, and if not, you can tell if it is want your digging for because of the sounds (or display) just like your large coil. Plus, it is right there on your shaft. I am getting ready to order mine very soon. Hope this helps.

I did a simple fabrication to my upper shaft so I could keep my wires inside the lower shaft!I did not like the idea of my wires being wrapped around the lower shaft, but I don't have any problem with the wires from the control box to the probe!:minelab:

I have been contiplating doing just as you said you have done. Can you post a couple of pics on how you modified your upper shaft. This machine looks "sexy" with no wires wrapped around the shaft, and I want to keep it that way. LOL

Thats EXACTLY what I was considering modding mine, but was'nt exactly sure how the other end of the probe box ataches to the control head. Can you post a pic of the other side of the box? Does the probe tie into the original enclosed coil connection internally? Thanks for the pics.
Travis

Yes the other end of the box has a short cable to it and it hooks to the head of the detector as normal. If you order the probe from Sun-Ray they have new upper shafts also and will attach the control box to the shaft ,thats what i did I got the shaft and the probe as one unit thats how I still have my orignal shaft!Let me know if you still would like a picture of the other end!I could'nt tell you how they attached the box to the shaft ,but I will take it apart tomorrow and let you know if you need me to!:minelab:

Why can't a go to radio shack and buy a female plug, a male plug and a piece of wire. Solder the mail to the new wire. Drill a small whole were you cut the box out. Feed the bare end of the wire through the whole. Pull the wire through the end of the upper shaft. Solder on the female. Connect the new female end to the coil wire lnside the lower arm and then attach new male end to the sumray switch.

That way no large whole and wires inside.

Well, we got some good ideas goin here. I am gonna start a new thread on X-1 mods to keep this organized.

I tried that and what i found was the coil cables were to long with the extra wire added and when i inserted the lower shaft into the upper shaft the wires would bunch up but if you are tall so you can extend the shaft out all the way its fine but I'm kind of short so i need the shaft to be able to go in further!

I wonder if cracks could develop around where you made the cut out? to me it looks like that you maybe cut a little bit too much metal out! - only time will tell i guess - a good idea though thats if the shaft suffers no stressing/breaking after a few hundred hours use.

We will see! It's not as big as it looks in the picture ,If it don't work then i have another shaft!!!Only 25% cut away, and like I said in my previous post ,I'm not telling anyone to do this to there shaft. This is the first try maybe WE can come up with something better, but I have been using it this way for 6 month's and no problem but I do take very good care of the detector in the field!

Roger that Gary. We need some more peeps brainstorming for different ideas. I like the additional wire idea, if we could find a way to correct the "bunching issue".
Travis

Got 5 pin female and male microphone jacks and a 3 foot coiled mike cable. I'll but off all but a few inches of the cable.

I'll take pictures of the modification and post them for all to enjoy or laugh at. I figure it will be next weekend by the earliest.

I just drilled about a 1 inch hole in the upper shaft on the botton and lighly sanded it and it looks factory. A guy can reach in the hole to tighten it and unscew it.
