Auto or Manual

I know this question has been asked before, but which is the best setting to run in. I have been in coin mode and silver mode and gh 's open setting mode with auto 2 and 3 and have been finding average targets. My buddy has an etrac and runs manual at 27 and finds stuff twice as much as I do. He keeps telling me to run manual and I will find more. Last Saturday ,I ran manual 27 all day and found some silver, but the calliope was driving me nuts.I would make a sweep in auto and come back across the same ground in manual and found a few more targets. You had to really listen for any silver hits with all that noise. Does ground conditions effect auto vs man? Does anyone suggest running manual and go to 4 tone to get rid of the calliope? It is nice to get some opions as to what works for them.

I run auto and +2 . And getting targets 8 inches plus auto works for me here in Indiana. :twodetecting::minelab::thumbup:

I've been battling this question myself and as a new user may not have all the answers. My ground is highly mineralized and in Auto + 3 the machine has run as high as 18. In places the suggested sensitivity has run as low as 5:confused: I continue to mainly run in the Auto modes up to +3 depending on noise. I have tried manual a few times up to say 24 and had to back down to 20. I need to experiment with this again.

You said you were running manual at 27 but what does the Auto mode suggest for a level. I might try manual a few notches below 27 if it was noisy like say 24-25. If your ground and ears can handle it. Somebody posted that 24 was the magic sens level. At the end of the day you got some silver in manual so it worked.

I run auto +3 and sometimes switch to manual(30) to check a target.

When I was very used to my E-Trac, and had found all but the iffy signals in our local park, I used manual to pull a few more keepers but I had to really know that detector to make it work. I found manual worthless until I had many many hours on the E-Trac.

I have tested some targets and found in some cases the signal sounded worse in manual than auto and visa-versa.

My first question would be to ask if you were able to "check" any of your buddy's targets before he dug them? No offense, but if not, we can't determine if the reason he finds so much more is due to the detector or "operator error". Secondly, comparing the E-TRAC to the CTX...... IMO, both Auto and Manual are "hotter" on the CTX than on the E-TRAC. In head to head comparisons using comparable sized coils, I found the CTX 3030 was able to run two or three "clicks" higher than the E-TRAC, without falsing. In other words, if I were to run my E-TRAC with a manual setting of 23 before it chattered, I could run the CTX 3030 with a manual setting of 25-26. If the E-TRAC chose an Auto Sensitivity of 22, the CTX 3030 would generally select Auto Sensitivity of 24-25.

Manual or Auto? Auto Sensitivity is based on three channels, as analyzed by the CTX. Manual sets all three channells the same. As to which is better..........opinions vary..... But for me, it is site dependent. If I am in a site with few targets and minimal trash, I will implement Manual and crank it up until it chatters......then back it off one click. But if I am detecting where there are multiple targets, lots of ferrous targets or lots of modern trash, I'll select Auto with an offset. And that offset is dependent on how much trash or the number of targets in the ground. The more crap in the ground, the less the offset. Generally, for the sites I hunt, mine is at +2 or +3.
If you have too much Sensitivity selected (manual or with the offset), the transmit signal will be reflected back toward the receive windings of the coil, causing you lose depth and stability. I hate to use the old analogy.... but it is much like driving in the fog with your headlights on bright. You see farther on dim, with less light refected back into your eyes. Similarly, a detector can detect deeper if it doesn't have to deal with an abundance of signals being bounced back.

As to the calliope.... Unless you change the discrimination Pattern, the CTX 3030 will still make a tone on every accepted target that it is now. But by using fewer tones, you may not feel you are at the circus. I'd suggest you try out the Combined audio profile. Combined allows you to hear one of five tones. One tone is assigned to ferrous type targets. And the conductive side is broken down into 4 different "bins". You set the parameters of each bin. You set the level of the ferrous line. And you set the tone for each bin, based on tones that sound good to you. HH Randy

Thanks Guys ,I guess I needed some moral support on this one. Randy your response was great ! It really helped. I came from a etrac and I feel the ctx is a better machine.I have checked some of his targets and they ring up great. I think some of it may be operator error as I am still learning this machine. I had good luck in auto 2 and should stay with what works. We hunt some old fairgrounds that is really hit hard, but still gives,it is just a while between good targets. I know that auto 3 in that area gives too much falsing so manual 27 was way to much. I am still learning gh's open pattern with his tone settings. It is hard to listen to all the chatter.I run that program in auto 2 as well. My main pattern is coins and silver jumping to open when I check a target for falsing. I guess like you say ,dig it all.
