auto ground balance/tracking

The C$ is the first machine I have had to ground balance. How do you know when the ground conditions require rebalancing? Can soil conditions change within a few feet?
Also not sure what auto ground tracking is. The manual says "automatically adjust to changing ground conditions." Sounds like it is adjusting the ground balance but the manual says "unit can be auto-ground balanced at any time while in tracking mode" so it seems that it is something different than ground balancing. I read on the forum that a lot of you don't use tracking. What is tracking and why is it not used often?
Thanks

Not sure why Fisher noted in the manual that you can re-ground balance while in auto trac unless perhaps, it helps in rare cases of extreme ground conditions? <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug"> I have never done it myself and cannot imagine what conditions it would be useful in other that what I just mentioned.
Typically I do the auto ground balance thing and detect with auto-trac off. Anytime I want an "update" I turn auto-trac on for a few sweeps and then turn it back off figuring I am good to go. At some iron filled sites I have found it useful to let auto-trac set the GB. Find a small area that is relatively target free, sweep back and forth over it a few times then turn auto-trac off. It seems to help reduce iron falsing into the positive number range and any iron that still occasionally falses positive will read as iron when resweeping.

sorry JS but I don't uderstand what you are saying when you said" Anytime I want an "update" I turn auto-trac on for a few sweeps and then turn it back off figuring I am good to go." What do you mean by update?
Also you said "At some iron filled sites I have found it useful to let auto-trac set the GB." I don't understand that either. How does auto-trac set ground balance. I am so confused!!

Sorry if I confused I'll try to expain better.
Auto ground balance and auto trac do the same job which is to adjust the C$ to the ground minerals. The difference is that while auto trac constantly monitors the ground mineral level and makes adjustments to the GB as you detect, auto ground is a one time adjustment that you do before hunting.
To update means when I want to reset the GB in case the ground minerals have changed. You can do it 2 ways with the C$, either reset it using the auto ground OR turn ON auto trac and let it do its thing.
As to just how Auto trac sets the GB I'll have to leave that one to the engineers. LOL
