i've read good reports and bad reports. been told that it's only good to be used on the beach, that it's not an allround detector.don't waste your money.i don't like tid machines.there's not alot to choose from in australia.i like hunting in parks, sports complex's,on the beachs for recently dropped coins and jewellery.so i'm looking for input and i've been on metal detector reviews.read everything they had to say and i don't know if i'm coming or going. help!! blowfly:detecting:

My 2 cents worth- if I could have only one machine with which to do basically everything, it would be a Sovereign. I'm on my 5th one, and have had more other machines than average. If I can't have a sov, I'll go fishing or take up some other hobby. There may be machines that do one thing well, but all around, the Sov is where it's at...

AMEN Bro!

Well, on a Sov you can go by tone alone, or use a digital meter.
Sov tone is pretty much VCO. The tone changes with the conductivity of the target. Not talking about the 3 or 4 tones of some detectors. A Sov can produce hundreds of tones. The result is a unique pattern of tones...a particular sound....for each target. It talks to you.

Every target produces a "word" with a Sov. Depending on target depth, sweep speed, and the particular kind of coil used, the words can be more or less distinctly different between different kinds of targets of the same general conductivity.

With a coil that has a very narrow detection window you will notice an incredible difference in sound between two different targets of similar conductivity but different composition....even though the same basic pitch for the conductivity is the same between the two.

Once you get used to a Sov, for most targets it will scream yes or no to you.

You can set them up to hunt fairly shallow by turning down the sensitivity or by increasing the sweep speed.
Most of us set up the sensitivity to get as deep as possible. You judge target depth by size of the target and the loudness of it. You want shallow, then ignore the weaker sounds.....you want deep, ignore the louder sounds. You can pretty well figure how deep an object is by width and volume after a little practice.

If you take the time to learn the Sov, you will be spoiled for life! I would rather hunt with a Sov and a good meter in the Parks than one of the many "complicated" computers on a stick that they seem to roll out every 15 minutes now! While those folks are "playing with their programs" I'll be hunting! Don't bother me, I'm listening to my Sov! And, at the beach they are like a vacuum cleaner! There are plenty of ways to lighten them up by rear-balancing them or hip-mounting them, all a personal preference, just as long as the modifications allow you to hunt longer. No other machine is as easy to modify as the Sov. Some say that they are heavy and out of balance, but, I think Minelab gave us a real gem that we can play around with to our hearts content! You can really personalize a Sov and that's a fun part of the hobby too. Kinda like when we were kids we used to soup up and or dress up our hot rods (cars). And, Sovs are built like a tank too!
