Hi all

I am new to the world of metal detecting and this is my first post here. I have been reading lots though, as there is lots to learn, but I absolutely love everything about my new hobby. I am in the western suburbs of SA.

I had been thinking about it for a long time, but finally bit the bullet and bought a second hand Minelab sd2100, (went halves with a friend) with a few extra coils and other accessories thrown in. I am looking at getting another one soon so we will both have one, and have a bid on one on ebay atm.

I have plans to hit the Adelaide Hills area soon, and will look for some of that yellow stuff everyone seems to be wanting.

I have only been to the beach with the MD so far, for my first time, and managed to find a couple of coins, and a whole bunch of bottletops. Lots of them.

I played around in the yard, getting people to bury their gold rings and see if I could find them. I was so excited when I did.

I am still getting used to the different sounds etc, so am hopeful that I will be able to determine things like bottletops in the future.
Up till now though, the kids havent tired of digging for them. Yet.

I found that once I was on the beach, MD in hand, time vanished. I absolutely love the thrill of the chase. Its exhilarating.

I would have been out there today but I had a prob with the MD  After the first time I had used it too.
It won't power on at all. I will be taking it to Minelab tomorrow, and am hoping it is just a battery issue. The battery is pretty beat up, and the guy I bought it from did say it wasnt the best. When I test it with the multi meter it is telling me it is charged, though, so not really sure. Will keep my fingers crossed.

Cheers all

Good luck and welcome to the world or detecting. If you use the 21 on the beach make sure it doesn't get any salt spray on the control box. I have seen some real disaster's from people using their Minelab Pia's for beach work. I used to use them on the beach myself when I lived near one and had really good results too. But I always covered mine with a plastic bag to seal it from the elements. In doing so I never had a problem. I have seen some machines that were not taken care of and the corrosion was horrid. They simply are not made to take a full on salt environment. If you cover it you should not have any problems. Also carefully wipe it down as per Minelabs instructions in doing so in the manual if the day was particularly windy and salt spray was about. Have fun digging!
