Audio settings

I searched for this topic, but didn't see it here.

Can anyone give a better explanation for the audio settings for the Explorer XS (Normal, Audio 1,2,3) than the manual or the Sabisch books? And what setting is recommended by experienced users here (bryce-IL) for the best target separation/differentiation?

Additionally, I have surely walked over numerous valuable targets because I use my detector on sensitivity 12-14 (semi-auto). I would love to crank it up to 30-32, but when I do, the detector goes crazy with all sorts of noise, basically like falsing. Am I do something wrong? I can't ground balance it out, and the coil acts erratic. When I hunt with sensitivity at around 12-15, I find lots of stuff, but am sure I'm missing deeper targets because of the lower settings, however the coil and detector behave in a stable manner.

Automodeler,

audio 1,2,3 were 'renamed' in later versions of the explorer. I used an XS for nearly 10 years and preferred hunting in normal. Some Explorer users that came from using Sovereigns like the pitch hold, where the threshhold tone goes up or down to match the 'tone' of the last detected target. They find it helpful when going over targets at the fringe of the detector capability. Personal preference there.

I tried all of them and settled on NORMAL. It allowed me to differentiate best between targets. I didn't care for the
elongated or drawn out beeeeeeep of the LONG setting. SMOOTH took away some of the character of the audio signal as well. I found PITCH HOLD more annoying than helpful and thus settled on NORMAL. From what I've read, most of the advanced hunters used NORMAL.

if you use Xs and cant lift up sensitivity 15 automatic your coil or coil cable is dead. change to any coil and meet somebody who use explorer and compare. its no different with what explorer you will compare they work the same. I use XS and i use 26- 32 manual sensitivity without any problem. usual problem is coil, forget for sometime any other option then Audio normal. sometimes I use audio 1 only without discrimination, when I cant get more with normal in good spots littered with iron, but I am profi  . change coil switch to manual sensitivity 15-24 and test it. good luck Stasys

I use normal...and for the EXACT reasons Rich described in his response.

As for your sensitivity settings...give semi auto 26 a shot...stick with it for a while ...and see if you start finding stuff a little deeper.

The nature of the explorers is to be a little "chirpy"...so no matter where you set the sensitivity at...you will probably encounter a little "backtalk".

I have personally found semi auto 26 to be about right for most sites. You might even want to give semi auto 22 a shot...but try semi auto 26. for a while and try to get used to it.

Sounds like the coil or cable... but how long has it been since you cleaned between the coil and cover? It takes very little dirt to drive my SE crazy.... so i clean mine after every hunt. Have you switched coils and tried it? I agree.... Normal works best. I use pitch hold in the desert working very weak signals, but no where elce because some of the tones it switches to i cant hear very well with a low threshold. Its like taking a hearing test. Some hunters like the long in trash.... drives me nuts.

if i were new to the explorer I would use conductive or ferrous and stick with one or the other and not change anything for at least 100 hrs. After the 100 hrs experience then you might be ready to tinker with other settings
