Audio questions. Please HELP!

New member
I'm a new 3030 owner but have been detecting on and off for 25 years. This is my first Minelab. I have read the handbook, taken notes and read it again. I think I have a pretty good understanding just need more field time. Today was my 2nd time out and I have 2 questions

1. When I plug in my Sun Ray headphones, the audio continues to come out of the speaker too. So, I have audio in my headphones and coming out of the speaker. Is this right?

2. I was hunting with Dr Tones US coin program. There were several times where I had a reading on the screen in the accepted range but no audio to go with it and the reading wasn't deep most of the time. For example, I had a 12-38 at 4 inches and the 3030 gave no audio. Am I doing something wrong?

I did score my first silver today! 1936 Quarter.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Thoughts off the top of my head ...

1. Are you using wireless module? If make sure your settings on the CTX are correct for the module

Do the headphones have toggle switches on the ear cups? If so then it could be a matter of selecting the correct switch position. On my Sunrays when wearing the corded ear cup over the left ear the back toggle switch has to be flipped down before I hear the sound amplified through the head phones.

I'm not at home but I will check my settings and update my reply once I get there.

2. Maybe not,
did you retrieve the target?
did you check the same target from a perpendicular angle? You can sometimes rule out a sweet nail that way if it hits from one direction and not the other.

If you dug anyway and it was a good target there are many possible explanations if you have the patience and describe it well it will be explained by the awesome group here in this forum. It's also a peek at why the CTX gets good targets otherwise missed!

Congrats on the silver and the CTX it will serve you well.

What a pathetic search function this forum uses.
There are dozens of threads about this same issue but you sure can't find them unless you do the searching yourself. this should be a sticky:

The newer Pro Golds will shut off the ext. speaker but I don't guess the older ones don't.

Hello,
I will be in PA, extreme eastern part in April hunting an old property as part of a group hunt. I run the CTX as well, what kind of sensitivity readings do you get on your soil with the CTX, and if you don't mind my asking, what part of PA are you in? I'll be in Horsham for the hunt. Thanks for your time. Hopefully the threads that other guy posted will answer your questions. I don't know on the audio but if the signal was in a shaded portion of the screen you want hear audio on a target, I set my P2 screen as an open screen, do that and check signals like that in an open screen and see if you hear the target then. When in doubt, dig! You will get it, it's a very good machine you will take to it fast I'm sure.
Tried to send this as a PM but apparently you are a new membe and do t have those privileged yet. Welcome to the forum!

Firstly, congrats on the quarter. :)

Secondly, the previous link posted by sprchng should fix you up perfectly with your headphone issue.

Lastly, that behavior can be rusty iron, or a good target co-located with iron.
See if this helps... http://www.findmall.com/read.php?86,2264380,2264382#msg-2264382

Wow I really need to proof read my posts when I'm using my iPad. Apologies for all the typos, that is a hard post to read I made. Anyway please look over the poor quality of my previous post. I could not edit it for some reason? Thanks

Hello Booty,

I was running auto +3 today and it was sticking between 22-25. Im in Northeast PA, near Hazleton, about 2 hours from Horsham.

Ok thanks for the info! Sounds like the soil may be milder than here in NE Tennessee. Good luck in your hunts!

Thanks for the advice on the headphones. I flipped the switch you suggested and it turned off the external speaker. Thanks again.

Awesome! I just got in and put the kids to bed, very glad to read the switch worked. Your gonna really enjoy this machine!

One more question,

Does the audio overrule the visual? For example, I sweep the coil and get no audio but the screen shows 12-38 at 4 inches. I check from a different angle and again no audio but another visual readout on the screen. What do I do with this target? Is the audio being discriminated out because it's rusty iron? Almost everything I read says to trust your audio but what are you experienced guys doing when there is no audio with an accepted target shown on the screen? Thanks.

Most of your ? can be answered in the hunting in trash post at the top of the forum . As far as that 12.37 go to pinpoint sizing and build a target on the screen does it stay were you pinpoint .
If it stays where it was pinpointed I would say dig .
If you dig then you will have your answer if you find nothing then place a magnet in hole and see if it indeed had iron rust .
One other point to consider is if 2 targets are showing on the screen at the same time say iron and a good target coin watch the cursors in iron and coin do they move in the cursor location at the same time when you sweep . A lot of movement means the targets are farther apart so I will try to isolate these hut's to see if I can get a high tone if the cursors are locked solid in both locations this means the targets are stacked or very close together not much movement of the cursors a tip I got from Angelica storm a poster on this forum .
Your going to have to dig a lot of signals to get a feel of what the ctx is telling you by digging those signals you will have a better understanding of what it's telling you . sube
