ATX & Traveling

I have a question for those of you that have taken your ATX on an airplane. And I do have the Hard Case by the way. I am assuming that when traveling by air, one checks the ATX via baggage claim. With that said, do you lock the case up or leave it open? And did they open the case to look inside? My fear is that they will open it up and not be able to close it back properly and therefore could damage the unit or any of the coils. I have the stock and large mono currently and it's a bit of a challenge to pack them correctly and close the lid. I can only imagine how much more work will be required when I purchase the 8" Mono.

Anyway, any suggestions or input on the best way to travel with the ATX, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I am not sure the box is small enough to be brought on as carry on. Most airlines go with 45 inched L+W+D. I could not find the outside dimensions for the Garrett box. I have not had any problem with taking detectors as carry on. However, I have always packed the shafts in my checked baggage. As the ATX's shaft can not be packed separately, unless it is with the coil...another option, there might be a problem. The best course of action is to call the airlines you are traveling on.

With the new check - on the way home - make sure the batteries are in the detector as you may be asked to turn it ON and if you can not turn it on...it does not go on the airplane.

I know I used to carry my scoop assembled in a hard shell golf club box. When the airlines started charging $75 each way...I got a $130 travel scoop, put it in my checked baggage and saved $20 on my first trip. We have lost so much in the name of security and we are paying for it now and we still do not get any peanuts.

Good feedback. I will probably send the coils in the ATX case and then carry on the actual detector part.
