ATX and Nevada Gold Nugget

I just got back from prospecting in northern Nevada, with this fabulous 0.85 oz nugget found with the Garrett ATX. Great country and great gold, it just does not get any better - thanks Garrett!

Mighty nice!

Was there a lot of small trash iron? I'm wondering if you were looking in old tailing piles?

Can you elaborate a bit? Just curious how found.

Joe

PS: I've tempoarily retired my ATX from wet sand beach duty. It seems my Dual Field does better by me. My ear is better attuned to the White's PI signal. Might investigate the TDI Pro which my buddy has....merc at 20" incredible!!

It was found in virgin ground, although prospectors have made test pits and cuts in the area in the past. There is some ferrous trash around campsites but almost none elsewhere. I could hunt for many hours with no targets, and then maybe find a boot tack.

Different machines suit different people better for various reasons. I am probably going to sell my Surf Dual and TDI. I certainly prefer the ATX over the TDI for prospecting, and I only beach hunt rarely enough that the ATX can cover me for that also, without needing to keep other detectors around I almost never use anymore. That is not to say both are not great detectors - they are. It is just my situation that is different.

Steve,
Not only is the weight great on that nugget...but she sure is real purdy to look at too!
Congrats...

Wow! that's the find of a lifetime Steve. I'll be back to the desert this winter and you have my heart rate up already. Do you prefer the standard 12" coil or another size. I have the 20" but have not used it.

Yeah, I prefer stock coil for most detecting, but 8" mono is good in tight locations. I may get 20" coil for the wide open spaces if I can find one for around $350

You are one lucky fellow! Or, maybe not luck. You had carved a living out of prospecting and selling metal detectors, yet are quite content still going out in the field with one of those magic wands and still continue to impress everyone! Thanks for such a great post!

Hi John,

Hard to go wrong with a detector like the ATX. It is mostly just a matter of making the time to use it. Getting out of retail was the key - now it is just all about the prospecting, with some jewelry hunting on the side.

Thanks for all your great work on the forum!
