ATTITUDE Is Everything!

Hi Folks, I've Been A Th'er For 25 Plus Years And If Any One Thing Stands Out In My Mind About Metal Detecting In General,

It's Your State Of Mind..Attitude! You Can Go Out & Search Till The Cow's Come Home, But, If You Go With A NEGATIVE

Attitude, Chance's Are Real Good That You Will Come Home EMPTY Handed!

I Try To Envision GOLD & SILVER In My Mindset..In Other Words, Every time I Get A Signal..I Wonder, Sometimes Muttering

To Myself, Is It A Gold Ring Or A Silver Coin!? Nothing "Turn's Me Off" Faster Than A Negative Thought Or Person..One Who

Complains About Everything..It's Too Hot,Too Cold, Too Dry..Hunted Out..Bad Spot..Nothing Here, Etc!

Remember This Above All Else! There's NO Such Thing As A "Hunted Out" Spot..THEY Did NOT Find It ALL!!

Some Of My Favorite Places To Hunt: 1- Older Apartment Building's 2- Older Home's 3-Old Play Grounds 4- Old Schools

5-Older Hotels-Motels 6-Swimming Holes 7-Beach's 8-Older Parks 9-Older Public Buildings 10-Grassy Areas Along The Side

Walks 11-Older Church's 12-Creeks-Fishing Lakes..Get A Gold Pan & Enjoy Another Aspect Of Treasure Hunting..I Never Fail

To Find A Little Color! Hope This Helps..Have A Great Day.

I agree. I'm a die hard when I'm out in the field. I would stay out there all night too, if I could. Hunt in winter (30 degrees) or mid summer (95 degrees). And I too try and concentrate on coins when I hunt. But I also relax and enjoy the scenery and quiet!

you are absolutely right, macfleetwood! i been saying that a long time too. although i always go out with a decent attitude, [i'm pretty much the same way every day] i trained myself long ago [i reckon about 25 years now] to go out with a clear mind, and expect to find nothing. that way, when i don't find much, then i don't feel let down or lacking in ability, and have nothing to blame except an obvious lack of targets. attitude really is everything, and i'll tell you why:
1. never gone home empty handed. patience and persistence and research are the keys. the failure of any one of these hallmarks during a hunt will ruin things in a hurry!
2. i noticed long ago that if i got angry or impatient at not finding much during the hunt, i would get careless, swinging high and hard, quickly become tired. not my cup 'o tea.
3. i've always felt that all ground is good ground. i have yet to disprove myself on that one. lotsa good stuff out there just waiting to be found. having a good pardner helps a lot too.
great post, mac, and thanks for reading! hh!

Just getting out having a good time is what matters to me - good finds are just a bonus.
When the wife tags along, she can't believe when I dig up a tab and I go "Mooooahwhahahaha" with a smile on my face and say "Ain't that cool?":detecting: But when I dig up a piece of jewelery, she is the one saying that it's cool.
As long as we have a good time.:smoke:

YES, Yes, and yes...

...I could not agree more!
And on the occasions when I am tired and just did not find anything of consequence or value (to me that is), I have to remind myself that I am not a youngster and that the fresh air, the walking, digging, walking, digging, walking is great exercise. I also try to enjoy the nice old homes I might be detecting by and admire the old architecture. I enjoy the sun, the cool breeze, hell I even enjoy the rain.

Yes, I also talk to my detector too. You know, little things like; "come on baby, bang one out for daddy", "ok now, do your thing and sing for me my little metal friend".
Or as Tony Little might say: "You can do it!"
I also have a whole list of song lyrics that I sing to myself to put both myself and the detector in the right mood.

This diamond ring doesn't shine for me anymore -- Gary Lewis and the Playboys
Shine on you crazy diamond -- Pink Floyd
Gold in them hills and its waitin' for me there -- Marshall Tucker Band
Diggin' for the motherlode -- Black Oak Arkansas
Come to Poppa --- Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
Give it away, give it away, give it away now --- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Silver Threads and Golden Needles -- Linda Ronstadt
I'm the man on the Silver Mountain -- Richie Blackmore's Rainbow

A very wise man has said, "Thoughts are things!"

A book I'm reading sites research that has proved the intention has a measurable effect and in the motivating force behind just about everything!

It pays to be careful what and how you think!

Truer words were never spoken!! Whether metal detecting or life in general, Attitude IS everything. Just yesterday, I went to a local school that I have hunted for years and came back with the nicest silver cross I have ever found. If I had considered it "worked out", I would not have found it. I just knew there was something good to be found there. I will be going back again and finding even more "goodies".

You guys don't need metal detectors, you need "Witchy sticks" I'm serious, have you ever tried one?
I really doubt attitude means alot. Hey, I've gone with a positive attitude and told myself "It's just going to be SVDB's today" and I've never found one. Mostly I just go out, half brain dead, detect for awhile, then go sit under a big tree and eat my Ham & Cheese and sip my Jolt and just be delighted in the day, Then, go home and show cutie-pie my 3 or 4 Zincers with a big grin on my face.:wiggle:

Hey, silversmith...anyone who can go home after detecting with a big grin on his face has got a great attitude...keep it up. HH Sapper

macfleetwood is absolutely correct on this one!

I was having lots of pain and trouble sleeping the night before I went out detecting.
While laying there I was thinking it had been several years since finding my last Chinese cash coin and wouldn't it be great to find one in the morning.
Then I remember repeating to myself several times that I really wanted to find some pre-1900 silver, especially a seated liberty coin of any kind.
So it went throughout the night every time that I woke up from the pain and was trying to fall asleep again.
I sat at the computer several times and looked at pictures of old coins and relived some exciting finds I had made in the past.

So what were the results you ask?

Of course I had repeated to myself several times throughout the wee hours of the night that it would be just great to find some gold coin, or better yet a trade dollar.
"You can't always get what you want." ---But--- "If you try some time, you just might find, you get what you need." hmm' maybe an old Rolling Stones song.

I am Happy that I have health and sore muscles, its good exercise for me since I need to lose a few pounds anyway. Gets me away from all the negativity on TV. I think we need some positive thoughts. Interesting post!

Recommend A Good Camera To Keep Trac Of Your Finds And All Your Valuables Around The House! Good Hunting!

Mac

This Pretty "angler" Has ABSOLUTELY Nothing To Do With "Treasure Hunting"!..OR..Does She????

All Depends On Your Attitude!!

Spot-on. Attitude is everything. I use a couple of techniques - I tell myself I am going to find something for starters. Secondly, I consciously look at the speed I am swinging (either with a PI or VLF detector). Thirdly - I take a break and put the detector down and do some photography and even some 'specking' for small gold pieces (and yes, found some small stuff). Fourthly - I have to defeat my sub-conscious which dictates that I walk the easiest path between point A and B, that's the way everyone has walked over an area. and last but not least - never be afraid to move obstacles. I picked these points up in a guide to detecting - and the author makes these points even before giving an indication of where and how to detect. :ausflag:

Hi magpies,

I agree with you about the path you take and about doing things differently, kind of like taking "the road less traveled."
And then you through in a little positive attitude and the results are almost always good.
