What is the name of the marine epoxy or coating that everyone recommends to put over your search coil to protect it from the harsh rocks and salt water?

Thanks,

Gary

Loctite Aquamarine Epoxy.

how do you put it on? just on the bottom? (boy this is a dumb question ) seal the cover closed? before answering remember you
are dealing with an old lady and my retention level is........ well
lets just say some days I might be running a quart low.:stars:

No, the epoxy is used in place of the cover. To make a barrier between the coil and the ground, but eliminating the cover so that dirt or salty sand can't get trapped in the cover and cause falsing. For the beach folks it becomes a real bother to constantly have to dump out and rinse your coil cover. And the machines can become unstable if you don't. But an exposed coil is prone to wear and tear and can split on the seams or even wear a hole in the coil from rubbing. The epoxy functions as a coil COVERING without the pitfalls of a COVER.

You apply it with a small brush, like the little aluminum-handled utility brushes (also called acid brushes) or any cheap disposable brush. Just mix up the epoxy and apply a uniform coating to the entire coil, trying to keep it as smooth as possible and at least an 1/8 inch thick. When it wears down or if it chips or whatever, you can reapply it as needed.

Mike, I am thinking of selling my Garret Sea Hunter Mark II which I have only had for 3 months, and buying the Excal 1000. After using my Sov Gt today for the first time, I was in love. It seems like the Excal is definately the bomb. Better depth than the Sea hunter.
WWould you agree? Is it possible to call you sometime to ask some questions and get some pointers. My e mail address is garyabramslaw@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Gary

Gary, I don't know about the Garrett Sea Hunter because I've never used one. I did start out with a GTAx 750 though. As for the Excal, you can expect that it's a waterproof Sovereign and will work exactly like the GT. What is different is that the GT and the Elite both had the band 1 & 2 deal, where you could switch frequencies...I wish the Excal had that. And the fact that the GT can turn off the iron mask and the Excal can't. Like you, I got a Sovereign (Elite) for the beach a few years ago and loved it so much I had to have the waterproof version so I got the Excal. I've been very successful with it ever since and can't really enjoy hunting the beach with anything else. I use it for the beach, an Explorer II for the land, and my Fisher CZ-70 is my backup.

I'll drop you an email and if you have any other questions, fire away.

Thanks Mike. How is the depth on the excal. I have heard the Excal wont go as deep as the Garret as the Garret is a pulse detector?

Well, of course it depends on a few things. Excal 800, 1000, or a larger coil? I use the 1000...a 10" coil. Also can depend on the beach/area of the country. And of course the size and type of target. I don't know what kind of depth you're used to but I routinely get stuff at anywhere from a few inches to over a foot. I've pulled up some coins that were over a foot deep. I've found many a gold ring and even a good number of chains. Suffice to say it goes as deep as I want it to. :)
