Attention to Detail...

Just wanted to pointed out a couple small things I have noticed about the X-terras that show the attention to detail ML has put into these new machines.

First off is the pistol grip angle. For me at least it is "just right" allowing a natural comfortable angle between the wrist and forearm and not forced into an unnatural position like some others I could name. Second is the coil cover. Finally a design that lets you easily remove the cover even when full of grit/dirt. The cover has just enough flexibility to allow some bending and the lip molded that is molded along the bottom edge of the coils hold it firmly in place. Now why didn't I think of that?

Okay so these are not earth shaking things but after using many other brands that have not paid attention to these small things it is refreshing to see.

Minelab's own design with the bend in the 'S' rods of the Sovereigns, Advantage, etc., etc.

If I may, let me add that their flexible arm cup is also a nice tought. It has enough 'wrap' around the arm and with the strap and it's flexibility it is very comfortable.

The rods line-up well and snug up nicely to eliminate slop and wobble.

In all, the X-Terra's are an excellent 'package' design. besides that, THEY WORK! :)

PS: Perhaps a Minelab digital display in the X-Terra 'pod' housing and use that and the X-Terra rod system then undersling the Sovereign below the forearm? Then, too, can you impagine how nice it would be to have a Sovereign or Explorer coil weigh as little as even the 3 kHz coil for the X-Terra! WOW!! :D

Hi Jackpine,

I designed the coil top, coil skidplate, yoke and armrest/stand. :)

The coil skidplate was one thing I wanted to ensure is easy to remove, so I "stole" the geometry of the clipping system from the skidplate for the Explorer coil, and adapted it to the new concentric coil. I was never happy with other coil covers, and their prosaic method of fitment to the coil. The Explorer skidplate seemed (to me at least!) to be a much better solution. So I'm glad you like it. ;)

The angle of the handgrip was looked at closely during development of the X-Terras. We tried a number of angles, and this one was considered the best. If I remember correctly, it's not far off the the GP3000's handgrip angle.

So you know, I'm no longer employed there, but was heavily involved in the mechanical development of the X-Terra range.

:)

Monte,

Lets hope that any DD coils for the X-terra line are of a new design retaining the lightness of the concentrics. I have been using the X-T 70 alongside the Fisher ID Edge and the first thing you notice when switching is how the coil weight throws off the balance of the Edge. To be honest I do not find the heavier coil to be all that bad while in use, just when you first pick it up, but it could be a problem for some.
