Attempted dump detecting yesterday.

Finally found the dump. Looks like a full on forest now. Been closed for decades. Cant imagine finding any coins tho I tried. So much metal everywhere. Lots of cool glass bottles. Practically no plastic anywhere. Any suggestions on finding coins in this historical mess? Or should I just continue to pick up colored bottles? Cool place to check out regardless. HH. Matt

I admire you thinking about new places to detect.. But A Dump ??.... Not the first choice in an area where you may find coins..

You may as well go dumpster diving .... It's your choice, "and I bet though"..if you spent more time ,in a more likely spot for coins, you would do better..

Hey Elton. I hear ya. You have a good point regarding finding coins and it is well taken. Its just that this dump is so old I dont know what I might find. Amongst the trash are piles of dirt from construction sites in town- also very old. I'll detect it until I'm tired of it because of all the other interesting stuff there. HH. Matt

I hunted an old dump one time by mistake as a park had been put there. 30 mins. and I was going somewhere, anywhere else. HH

Although you may not find any coins depending on the era of trash your in you may find other interesting relics of that era. Besides bottle digging is a great hobby too

Hi Matthias, Don't give up just yet on detecting the old dump.Several years ago a buddy of mine and I detected an old dump on the Gulf Coast and it was not only very interesting, it was certainly worth the effort.Don't remember finding any coins, but I did find several discarded silver items. One particular find was a "larger than" palmsized sterling silver, lady's compact. I am pretty sure that dump was loaded with much debris from past hurricane cleanup. You have to consider that cleanup from fires, floods, storms etc. will often end up in the dump, so not everything in a dump will have been discarded because it was worthless and no longer of use. I once salvaged a bunch of goodies from a house fire site with my detector and a potato rake. The site was later scraped off and haulded to the dump. You would be surprised at how well some items can survive a housefire. Some of the coins were fused together and some only needed a cleanup.Use a small coil, crank up the disc. and see what turns up. I bet you will be surprised. HH, Charlie

Good luck............ show us the stuff.

I've found some neat things with this set-up, and a cheap homemade sifter and shovel works wonders at an "old" dump.

I originally began detecting to find dumps. Not for coins or metal items, but to dig for bottles. Of course the glass doesn't respond, but once you find the cans the bottles are found in the same area. Many older bottles are well worth collecting, so excavating dump sites is worth the effort and you never know what else you may find.

You all got me really psyched now! Looks like I have an alternative place to hunt for something other than coins. And yes! Decades ago Sterling silver was not very valuable and many items made from it were discarded in the trash. This place is close to my home and this is where the cop checked me out and he shared the dump history information with me. HH. Matt

Hi Bill, I happened to think it may be a good time to mention to(nooby) folks that dump sites and trash filled toilet holes are also good places for the critters to bunk up! I was shoveling cans and trash from an old trash pile one time and came up with a shovel full of little Copperheads. That wound up my digging there real fast. HH, Charlie.

I think copperheads come up on my Atpro at " get the hell out of there" LOL!:yikes:

Actually...I was detecting material 'dug/kicked out' from animals holes/homes in the dump. Im most afraid of bear cubs because momma is close! I pack a .380 and a new lock-blade knife so I feel indestructable (against humans). I would never shoot a momma bear...I'd rather take a beat'in myself. HH. Matt

Let me clarify. This 'dump' has been closed for decades and no longer a target for hungry animals. HH. Matt

Best of luck, you will find a lot of old things there! HH, Hank

When I was a kid used to go dump digging with my dad. Would find all sorts of things. Not sure about trying to detect due to amount of metal trash but look for old purses or wallets. My dad would find money and jewlery in them.

the guys digging the I 94 dump from pro 1900 found a gold coin 10.00 gold in the dump layers of ash cut metal bottles and a gold coin, i was digging a dump from the 1880,s looking for bottles when i looked at the side of the hole and found a 1877 indian also a dump from the 1970,s right hear in the rivine was full of old wash machines dating into the early 50,s 60, well we tipped one over and several silver coins fell out old chairs couches clothes coins get in them but detecting is not the wa to find them in a dump y

This is just one angle of the combination dirt dump (in the foreground) and the old dump (which looks like a forest) in the background. Notice the large tree in the foreground. It must be buried 3 to 4 feet with dirt fill from town projects over the past decades. Fun place to detect and I can bring my dog. HH. Matt
