ATP won't recover from a signal as before??

Grunter

Active member
Was hunting with my partner yesterday. My ATP would hit a signal and then start bouncing and it would take about 5 seconds to recover. I would move a couple of feet and get the same response. I'm running the 5x8 in Pro-zero mode. I put in fresh batteries,no change. I changed freq. no change. I did a factory reset,no change. Any ideas of what to do next? I would hate to return it to Garrett again. They gave me superior service and a quick turn around but I miss it really bad when its gone.

Mine was doing that intermittently a while back. Checked the coil connection and noted it had loosened up a little. Tightened it down and hasn't done it since. Might check that if you haven't already. Good luck. HH jim tn

Run through all the possibilities. Start with the coil connection, it gave me fits for a while until I realized I hadn't pushed it all the way in before tightening the retaining Ring. It just kept coming loose, until I figure that out.

As others have said, the coil connection sounds like the only thing you haven't checked. It doesn't sound like emi, but I'd test it at another site and also check the coil for cracked epoxy, especially if it's been used in the water or rain. I've had coils that acted erratic when wet, but ran fine once they dried out. It doesn't sound like that's your issue, though.

Checked the coil connection, same problem. Changed coils, same problem. Can a hard reset be done on the ATP by removing the battery while the machine is on and after about 25 seconds replace the battery and turn it back on and do the factory reset routine?

Had to send her off to Texas, boy I miss her real bad. I used my buddies ETRAC,CTX and Excaliber for the past couple of days. They are good but I really miss my Pro. She speaks my language.

WOW thats some buddy! Does he have three arms or what? Hope your gal gets back to you soon!

He also has a Soveriegn but I didn't use it. He is a dedicated detectorist who has a detector for every purpose and several backups. AH!! If we only had 4 arms and could swing them all. But I've discovered some can hunt close to others most can't. I really enjoyed those other machines but they don't speak to me like my ATP. Garrett has a real winner with the ATP and the ATG. I just wish they would refine them more and incorporate FBS technology, I would gladly pay thousands for a machine of that caliber.

Nice that you still got some hunts in while the AT's back at the Garrett spa & got to play with some other popular detectors! I'm enjoying my AT's more than ever - they're just fun to grab an' go! she'll be back in a few days, all rested up and raring to go!

please post resolution when you can...

Haven't heard from Garrett as of this date but wait until I get a picture up of my find at the beach with my friends 30/30.

To give credit where credit is due I posted the pictures in the 30/30 forum. I'm sure my ATP would have found it to.

Got my ATP back yesterday. I went on a river hunt using 5x8 coil. Got in the water turned on ATP did a factory reset, just to be sure. Did an auto ground balance knocked off 10 points. Started swinging hit my first target junk but VDI's kept rollin on until I lifted the coil out of the water. IMHO it still isn't recovering like it did before. Garrett says they put in a new mother board. Anyone else have this type of problem and what was your solution? I was running 5 bars sens. pro mode 0 discrimination. I used it again today still acting the same but I managed to find $2.17 cents in clad but would have to take the coil out of the water and waited a couple of seconds for it to recover. I tried it in the dirt when I got home got the same response.

Does anyone else have an issue with the 5x8 rollin off the VDI's while swinging. It does not seem to recover until I lift it off the ground about 10 inches. When I use my 8 1/2 x11 the VDI goes blank between targets and recovers quickly between targets. Any help advice would be appreciated.

Hi Grunter

If your having the same issue now as before, then maybe it's something your "inducing" into the machine that it doesn't like.

Why are you knocking off 10 points after you ground balance, I have never heard of that much taken out or added. i did the same thing as you with my 8.5x11 coil and only took 5 points off and it started acting up so I left it alone. It acted somewhat the same as what your describing above (skidish and erratic).

Start from the basics:

- GB ( no -/+ )
- Pro Mode
- Zero Discrimination
- Sensitivity (as much as it will handle)
- No Iron Audio
- No Notching

How does the machine run in this configuration?

Thanks.

:)

Thanks Nightcrawler, I'll try those settings tomorrow. My ground usually always auto GB at 80 but I read somewhere that decreasing the GB by about 10 points tends to stabilize everything. I usually run Pro.zero no iron audio. Does the frequency setting affect operation at all? I've had to go from 1 to 3 when I hunt near my bud's ctx because of interference from his machine.

The Frequency Off-Set doesn't affect the machine in any negative way Grunter, so no worries their.

Try my suggestions above to see how the machine runs at that point. You need to find a "stable" point with your machine first before experimenting with any of the features it has.

Once that is found, then try some of the other suggestions you read about, if the machine goes off in left field like mine did, you have a "stable point" to start from again. I run in a high mineral area of 92-94, so maybe that's why I can't tweak my machine like others can in a lower mineral area like yours (80s). Maybe you can't either (or not as much), and that's what you need to find out to get yours stable again.

Stable Point First

Let us know how things work out Grunter, thanks.

PS: Just another suggestion here when water hunting is, I use the Permatex Ultra Black Silicone Gasket Maker to seal my coil cover and coil wire sleeve to the coil wire where theirs a bit of a gap (at the base of the coil) to prevent any possible mishaps that water can cause. Works very well for me and something to think about using yourself or a similar product that will fill that air gap between the sleeve and coil wire that's still flexible when dried.

:)

Nightcrawler, I tried your settings with my 5x8 and all though the VDI's are still not settling down like I think they did in the past I can still distnquish good signals.

Hi Grunter

I just got in from a 14 hour trip, so I'm a bit scattered at the moment, so please bare with me. The 5x8 coil is definitely more finicky than the 8.5x11 is for ground balancing and getting it to settle down in the salt water and high mineral areas I run it in for sure.

The best way I found for my machine was to reduce the Sensitivity down 3 notches from the top and then ground balance it. Once that is done and everything looks stable, then slowly increase the Sensitivity until you start getting chatter or up to full if you can and leave it their. This procedure i do all the time now with the 5x8 coil. My machine is very stable from that point on.

Some things to take into consideration here:

- Temperature plays an important roll in the machines performance. The colder the environment/water is that you working in does slow things down some what. My machine does this when I'm hunting in colder temperatures but I'm used to it.

- EMI will adversely affect any machine.

- High Mineral ground in some areas will affect the performance of any machine as the same with Salt Water in different parts of the country.

- If you carry any electronics while you metal detect, that can make the machine act up.

- Steel Toes and even the metal loops on your shoes can affect the machine. I can pick my steels up from 2' away with the 8.5x11 coil.

- Water in the coil can adversely affect how the machine behaves. Seal the wires up like i mentioned above and don't worry about it anymore, I put both my coils in water on a regular bases (both fresh and salt water).

As you can see Grunter, their is a host of variables here the can adversely affect your machine. Try to figure out which one is affecting yours.

Here is a good example of EMI feed back with the AT Pro in this video and how it stables out when he moves to another area. This is Madison maines video and I found hime to be very helpful through his videos for me.

The 20 second mark on is where it starts and then later in the video, (In another area) it settles right down.

Madison Maine has other informative videos if you like that one. This video link I posted for you is probably the best I have seen Catching the EMI affect on the AT Pro and is exactly the way mine reacts when that happens to me (not often, but does occasional y).

Let us know how things work Grunter, thanks.
