ATP showing repeated VDIs and tone constantly???

It shows repeated VDIs spanning the range and associated tones. I've changed batteries, coils did a cold reboot dropped the sensitivity down to one bar and get the same thing. I've run the manual GB up and down the scale and went thru all four frequency changes and still get the same behavior. I haven't had the control box submerged, only the coil. It seems to have started yesterday went I hit an overload signal. Any ideas on what could be happening? I think maybe a return trip to Garrett.

Its like it doesn't recover from the first target indicated and then it goes haywire reading every VDI and tone over the ground.

This kind of sounds a little like the problem i had. What i did is take a new set of batteries , put in and it has not had the problem yet after that. Mine started in all-metal and then moved to disc. 1 an 2 .

Make sure the connectors for both the coil and headset are in as far as they will go and the tightening screw thumb tight.

Check your coil connection. If that isn't it you'll need to send it in.

Sounds like when I had a cracked coil - didn't notice it until I dunked it and then it went wacko. It was OK the next day after it dried out. Garrett expressed out a replacement coil and issued a call tag for the bad coil, so I didn't have any down time, heh. ( I only had one machine back then).

Wonder if that may be my trouble too. Can't see a crack though.

Sounds like a bad coil to me. I already had mine replaced by them for that same problem. I would give Garrett a call

Fellas, I appreciate the feedback but I don't think its the coil. I changed my 5x8 thinking it might be the problem. I got the same problem with my 8 1/2x 11 1/2. I also changed the batteries to a new fresh set same problem. I've been getting a lot of iron grunts since it started occurring. The VDIs and the tones jump all over the place and the detector doesn't seem to recover from the first signal it encounters.

One more question, Would running your coil over a buried magnet cause an overload?

I dug a small magnet that I found with my ATP before and I didn't really have a problem with an overload. I would give Garrett a call

Have you changed to a site out in the country, where you could be absolutely sure that there is no EMI interference from underground cables, radar or transponder interference from an airport. There are places where I can't detect in Edmonton with similar results as you describe due to underground power cables. I have to run in these places with about 2-3 bars sensitivity. No ground balancing will remove this interference. It's not just Garrett's that will have this issue with EMI.

If EMI interference is the issues, that would explain why they sent you back a working unit, yet failed when you tried to use it. It can sure be frustrating trying to figure out where the problem is. I hope you get it figured out. The AT Series can sure produce.

John, I called Garrett today walked thru a number of trouble shooting tips but with the same old results. I sent it back to its birth place in Texas to get a professional look see. I'm missing it already. It has been a great producer and the more I've used it the better it gets. I found a 10K necklace with a nice weighted charm on it just a day or two ago. I've also found approx. 40 pieces of silver to include 3 Walkers since the first of this year. I'm sure that all machines are subject to an occasional hiccup just like people but I'll take my ATP with the utmost confidence that if its there and I step in front of it,it belongs to me.
