ATP repair frequency

New member
If you have read my posts. I have an ATP, for several months, an really like it. But, that like diminishes whenever I have a problem with it, and I am again.

I was wondering if I am the only person to have issues with their machine? I experienced constant chatter, sent it in and had it repaired. Except now the problem seems to be returning. I can stand in one place and the unit is quiet, suddenly it begins to chatter, and often it just stops. Then I noticed it was completely quiet and I wasn't getting any sound from my ear buds. (Haven't checked the adaptor to see if it is the trouble there.

Just wondering if maybe I have a lemon.?

It's hard to make a judgement call without being with you and using the detector. It could be location, EMI, set up, coil or a combination of the above. Or, perhaps there is something wrong with the electronics? Ant chance of teaming up with someone elese with the same location near you. I hope you get this figured out. The AT Series are wonderful machines.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, Grumpy. If you're having the same issues at different sites and have checked all the usual suspects - connections are tight, factory reset, etc., it could be that there's something wrong with the detector. Once, my AT Pro started chattering intermittently, and I discovered that there was a crack in the coil and moisture was getting in and wreaking havoc. Just something to check. Barring that, I'd call Sue and see if she can't get you traded out to a new unit.

I had the problem and it was repaired by Garrett. Only got it back a month ago and hate having to send it in again. I'll change the coil first. Seems to say something that it started after the first water hunt after it's return. I thought of the EMI issue. It chattered for a little and suddenly just quit, without moving, and then started again. Tried the frequency adjust, but it didn't work.

I have the same problem also, again. I sent it in for repair back in February, and now it's going back for the same thing (chatter/falsing) plus shallow depth.

The key thing I'm hearing is that it happened after the first water hunt.

I know the ATs are supposed to be waterproof, but the strictly anecdotal impression I've gotten is that some units don't hold up to being submerged.

The fact is that the majority of AT users have probably never put their detector underwater so we don't really know how widespread the issue is.

When you return the unit to Garrett, I would make sure to let them know you submerge it. I know you shouldn't have to do that with a machine that is supposed to be waterproof to 10', but it can't hurt to let them know they need to make sure it is watertight.

I never submerged my machine, just the coil.

I have the same issue. The last couple of weeks my AT Pro would just spaz like real bad EMI. Holding it still sometimes would quiet it down but as soon as you started swinging it went nuts again. I held it still and wiggled all the cables, made no difference, and tried turning the sensitivity all the way down and no change. It gets so bad you can't hunt. It happened yesterday and I tried all the regular stuff like shaking it turned it off and back on, which sometimes helped, and nothing helped. I pulled the batteries out while it was on(cold boot?) and it fixed it. Hunted the rest of the time with no issues.

Oh, and no water at all not even the coil. I was using the smaller 6x8 coil.

I have had my machine pretty close to being max depth in water on many occassions with no issues thus far, I always check cables to be tight before use and make sure everything is in proper working order.........so far so good. Longest time in water was 6 hours constant use. Hope u guys sort it out.
