Can anyone recommend a good book that explains all of the different metal detecting terms that you guys use? I've found some good websites, but I do better with books.

do a google search for treasure hunting books. there are some good ones by charles garrett.

If you have access to the Western & Eastern Treasures magazine on the last page, they have " Book Mart "
with many types of book you can buy.
"People's Publishing" try to google that site.

John-Edmonton over on the Garrett forum is a dirt fishing dynamo, he found his 100,000th coin last year.

Months ago he recommended two books: Successful Coin Hunting by Charles Garrett and The Urban Treasure Hunter by Michael Chaplan.

After reading them, I'd recommend both books very highly as well.

When you want to know what a term means, don't be afraid to ask. There are a lot of good people on this forum that are glad to share their knowledge.

Joel - Thanks for the reminder about W&E Treasures magazine. I've been meaning to subscribe to it, and I'll definitely check out their list of books.

Marcomo - I read about John's 100,000th coin just last night. Pretty amazing! It got me to thinking that it might be fun to start a spreadsheet to track my finds, as well! I'll definitely check out the two books that he (and you) recommend.

Thanks for the help!

The detectorist if you can find one probably is the best all around book ever written on the hobby and does not cover one brand..

I think I've heard of The Detectorist. Isn't it written in text-book fashion with a blue cover? Maybe I can find a copy on eBay.

Where in PA are you? I was born in York and moved to the south many years ago, but I still consider myself a Yankee. (No offense to the southerners out there!)

Google this:

"Glossary of Detecting Terms"

it should be the first hit ... it will get you started at least .. good luck.

"Taking a Closer look at Metal Detector Discrimination", both books are great, and filled with good info

Good luck!!

You guys are the absolute best! Thanks for all your advice, well wishes, and most of all...for your patience.

I hope Tesoro is better at responding to calls than they are email. I requested a comparison chart 2 days ago and still haven't received a reply.

regarding the comparison chart I requested. Not sure if they caught wind of my previous post or if was just a coincidence. Either way, I now have it.
