Here in the San Francisco Bay area of California we only have two seasons. They are Spring and Summer. So it is spring now and we get rain now and then. There is no rain from April to November. So the sod at the park is softer then in the summer months. I live in the Almaden Valley part of San Jose. The valley is named for the largest mercury mine in North America, the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine.
The soil at the parks in this end of Silicon Valley (the Santa Clara Valley) is mostly clay. To undercut a grass wedge in the summer is almost impossible. So now is the time to check out the parks. I once owned a duplex in the older part of own, near the old Spanish Mission, Santa Clara Mission. The soil there is soft loam and was very rich for farming. Now it is paved over and a lot of high tech electronics and Internet firms.
The first photo is of a bold-back of grass in the black clay soil. The second photo is 2 hrs work, 32 cents. I will not show the trash. About the trash it was mostly aluminum. I was using my MXT and did not dig iron (well one bottle cap) but am not good enough to discriminate out the Al.
