At Pro

I used my At pro for the first time yesterday at a couple of school yards i have not detected before. It about drove me crazy (it would be a short trip) I ground balanced it and stated swinging it was very noisy beeps and clicks and ticks. So i changed to standard mode same thing. I was finding coins deep so I know it's working. When I got home I changed the frequency and reground balanced ans reduced that number by 4 and it helped. But it's still a little noisy I have the stock 8.5x11 coil. I'm thinking about the Nel Sharpshooter coil. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Bart

Make sure the coil connection is nice and tight. It does sound like a emi issue and if hunting close to the area of the school building where the electronics are housed you might simply have to move further away. I seldom run into e m i problems with my A T and if I do usually a frequency shift at the time tames it down. Turning sen. down will also help.

I have both coils you mention and I wouldn't part with the stock 11". I use the Sharpshooter a lot in trashy spots and for getting in and around tight places, but it is not quite as deep as the 11" and the 11" does separate really well. Good luck! HH jim tn

The first time I used my ATP I had the exact same issue (with 8.5x11 coil). For me it turned out that I was still too close to my house. I was probably a good twenty feed away but that wasn't far enough (power lines in the ground, phone lines in the ground, etc...). As soon as I was far enough away from all the sources of EMI due to my house and that of my neighbors my ATP was nearly silent. I ground balanced, turned the sensitivity to maximum, Pro Zero mode, and had at it. I found a quarter in the first 60 seconds of using my ATP. Do as the others here have suggested. Make sure your coil is seated really well into the control box - it does matter! Once you're away from EMI your unit *should* calm right down. Mine runs silent most of the time until I ping something metal. If you're still having issues then call Garrett. They will bend over backwards to make it right. I'm very pro Garrett. They really strive hard to take care of their customers. The ATP is a quality unit built here in the USA at their facility in Texas. If you did somehow get a bad unit they'll make it right.

Turn down your sensitivity. Also, try different frequencies at the school to see if the interference decreases. It sounds like you are getting electronic interference either from above ground or below. You might want to try a different site also, to compare it to. The 5" x 8" coil handles the EMI (electrical magnetic interference) quite well. Also, a loose coil cable above the coil moving freely will also cause interference. Make sure it is taught, but not tight. As someone else mentioned, don't get another coil until you get to know your machine better.

I am pretty new with the ATP also. I went out for about 3 hours yesterday in a very trashy public park. I am finding with the stock coil in trashy areas, if I run it in pro custom with iron disc at 27, cancel everything but coins on the notch disc, sensitivity two from the top a good chunk of that trash is eliminated. Of course there are going to be those iffy signals especially nickles that need to be dug. The wet ground may have had something to do with it but, I did find two 1965 quarters about 8 inches down in the same hole that gave a strong 88-90 on the machine. All together I dug $3.24 in clad, a spent .357 casing, and a toy car. There was some trash also but, it was minimal.
