AT- PRO VS Whites MXT

gregp

New member
I use a whites MXT. I like it. I am going to purchase a third detector. I am looking for someone who has used an MXT and can give me a comparison of the MXT and the AT PRO. I know the pro is new but hopefully someone can give me some information. I know the MXT well but recently received the Garrett information brochure and am very intrigued by the pro. Thank you, Greg

Hi Greg,
I have an MXT Pro ( with tones and back lighted screen) and the new AT Pro and the machines both will do an excellent job on the dry land, I puchased the AT to get the waterproof factor so I can hunt in the rain. and so far this detector has lived up to most of the hype. I have not taken mine to the beach yet, but had a chance to take it to a really junky lot shortly after a good rain and ended the day with a few old coins, some clad and a couple good relics, but I did notice that with the targets being damp from the rain it tended to make it harder for the AT's iron mask/roll feature to do it's job, but it still performed very well. I really only had 2 complaints with the AT and those are, 1. headphone cable is a little short, but I'm sure that can be remedied, and, 2. I really wish it had a back light on the screen so it could be used to night hunt. Other than those two items I don't know of any other real issues with this machine.

I would say that if you buy an AT as a back up to your MXT that you will just need to decide which machine is actually the back up, The AT Pro or the MXT, But I will keep both as they both have a great array of great features for the type of hunting I do.
Hope this helps a little.

Thank you for the information. The back light is nice but not necessity for me here in Alaska since it's light almost 24/7 in the summer. Winter detecting doesn't happen. My interest in the AT comes from it's waterproof feature and the weight difference. After 3-4 hours my elbow starts to bother me with the MXT. You mention with target being damp with rain, the slow roll/iron mask feature may be compromised? Would this have been deal breaker had you known it before purchase? The MXT is a top quality machine with major features in my opinion. Will the PRO run with the MXT?

Hello..... I had a MXT Pro and although it is a good machine
I think the AT Pro will certainly let you make more accurate adjustments
by notching out specific VDI numbers. Not to mention that the AT PRO
has features you won't find on the MXT PRO,

I have not had a chance to really use the AT PRO so my comments are
based upon the features of the machine itself.

I don't know enough about the AT to tell the difference in the features. Could you elaborate on the features that the AT has that the MXT does not?

I would say that the AT Pro would definitly keep up wit the MXT and in some cases it exceeds it, I would say the AT has more depth, and the tone roll feature actually works in the damp, just not as well.
Overall they are both great machines, I think as more is know about the AT Pro, people are going to realize just how good a machine it is. and the weight and waterproof aspect of the machine are just
the icing on the cake (and the fact that it's $200 less than the MXT).

Greg,

I have used the White MXT and also have the AT Pro. If your are a coin, jewelry or relic hunter I feel the two machines are pretty close to a wash. The AT Pro might have a slight edge if you do a lot of relic hunting but even that might be stretching it a bit. However if you use your MXT for gold prospecting, the MXT stands out. The AT Pro only had a discriminating mode and does not have a deep searching all metal gold prospecting mode and is is not as sensitive to really small gold nuggets under 1/2 a gram. It would make a reasonable back up detector to your MXT for prospecting as its sensitivity to small gold is pretty good. Now if you like to play in the water like I do the AT Pro is the winner.

Someone else said that it would add capabilities to the detectors that you now have and might be a good addition that would open up new productive area for you to hunt. I tend to agree with that assessment as well.

God Bless and HH!!

Smitty, thank you, that's just the kind of information i was looking for. I have myself all worked up about an AT-PRO now. The feature I like the most is the all weather aspect IE: rain proof. I figured if the pro could keep up with the mxt and be waterproof it was a done deal. Thanks again.

Old thread but have a question.

The clicks, beeps and different VDI numbers on the AT pro - I know they are not the same as the MXT. Does it take time getting used to it? Like learning a new language.

I have both machines and have found gold with both! The wet weather/ water hunting is the major advantage for the AT Pro. I believe I can make more accurate Id's on some items with the MXT. I do know that the small sniper coil I have for the AT Pro far exceeds detection on depth of targets. I seem to be able to detect much smaller items with the AT Pro also. I have recently bit the bullet and started digging way more pull tab signals and been rewarded with a sore back and a 5.6 gram 14 kt ring. Both machines are great IMHO.

[size=large]Just my two cents here. I have owned both. Loved both. Came time to sell i kept the ATP. Found the Garrett to be as others already mentioned.
Especially being out in the rain. The ATP will take time to learn. Pretty simple though. Just as easy to learn as the MXT was. I am a real believer in the best balanced machine is a whites. You may find the Garrett a little weary some after a while. Sooner than you will on a MXT. Even though the whites is heaver.

Put that great little 5 X 8" DD coil on the AT Pro---weight/balance problem solved!---Plus it gets almost the same depth as the stock coil.------Also, if you are using the Pro Pointer you will get no "cross talk" while using it with the AT Pro.----The cross talk was BAD when using it with the MXT.

[size=large]Very true on the cross-talk. Really drives the mxt crazy. Never had a problem with my xlt nor my new V3i with the gpp. Just the mxt.
Will be getting the 5x8 coil soon. It's on the way. Will be teaching the hobby to two younguns Friday. Sure wish i had two ATPs.
