I was going to hunt the field at work today that was used to air dry lumber from 1925 -1965,when I turned on the at and gb. when I tried to hunt it was like a large bed of mixed metal vid all over sounds high to low growl lowered sen. no help manual gb no help could not use it. I got the tesoro out it is super quite turned it on it was same way could not hunt with either one.Question is to one of you oldtimers is it me or the soil that bad that a detector will not work the tesoro is auto gb.

Could it have been a cellphone you hadwith you that was on?

I did have it on but it has not had any effect before,I will try again and see thanks for the idea.

The auto gb. was mid 80's i tried higher and lower to 20 still bad, sen. was set 1 to max no change. same on both mach.

Hummm. I think the AT is 15kH, and not sure what that tesoro is.
Maybe something in the soil or some strong EMI
Have you used any other detectors there before?

Those are the only two detectors I have.I was thinking the same it must be a high iron content, the field has been just grass since the 20's,wish I could get them to work I know it is some old silver in that field.the men would hand stack the lumber in the field to dry before milling.

I have en counted this before here in Australia,it was a railway station and siding to load timber in the late 1800,I was using the 2500 and a mate was using a minelab,It didn't matter what I did it just wouldn't Gb,the minelab worked ok but was not stable and no good targets could be found, some steel and lots of ghost signals were dug,What I thought might have been the reason was the coke or coal used for the steam train was that unrealised that it caused the problem, this site has huge potential but we just cant crack it,when I get the ATpro after USPS have finished air testing it somewhere over the pacific ocean I will give it a run on this hot spot and see how it goes, some things are sent to frustrate us :ranting: Its funny how some places keep pulling you back even if you dint do any good at,,you just have a gut feeling that what if :rolleyes:or just maybe I will find something, any way keep on beepin,Bazza

I have encountered this same condition on small section of a beach I hunted on this last weekend.
It was a very trashy area with lots of small iron bits.
My Sovereign will runt quieter there but I dont think it works ant better as I have never found anything there.
I usually avoid hunting this area.
I tried the AT Pro there to see what it would do.

I've hunted many sites used to 'air dry lumber" and usually didn't have a problem. I say usually because there have been a couple where the old kilns and other metal structures from long ago had deteriorated and/or been destroyed and a lot of metal scrap was scattered all about the ground. The AT Pro's VDI (Visual Discrimination Indicator) will display some wildly random read-out when you have sever EMI or a lot of metal junk present.

Often a Tesoro will run quiet, but please not that it doesn't have "auto GB." The AT Pro, like the White's MXT and Teknetics Omega and several other makes or models does have an automated GB function, but the Tesoro Cutlass

Thanks for all the replies I am going to try again this week. Thanks for all the info Monte I loss the tesoro manual years ago ,just started back to hunting about 2 weeks ago it sure is fun don't know why I quit before.
