AT Pro takes a Bite Out of Crime

I went out with the intention of hunting a school yard lot, but 15 minutes into my hunt I was approached by an older gentleman whom I had seen before at another park down the road from where I was...He asked if I might be able to locate brass with the detector and I told him "You Bet...I can find most any metal". Well, He goes on to explain that a drug deal went bad in the other park by where he lives and that one young guy pulled a pistol and started shooting at the guy in the car who was buying...The specifics were none of my concern though...At first I was all in on this, because I am all for locking up ignorant Morons who would fire a weapon in city limits while standing in a kiddie park selling dope...But then my common sense kicked in, and I decided to call 911 to have a squad car on hand while I searched for the spent brass...A car arrived, and I explained what I was up to and told the Officer that The shooting happened in late May, and by now this brass might be 2-4 inches deep with all the rain and foot traffic in the area...I got to detecting and got a shallow 2" 52 VDI...I dug up a spent .22 cal round...I scanned it a few more times to get a feel for the VDI range, then concentrated on just that range...I got conflicting stories from 8 different witnesses to the shooting...5 out of 8 claimed only 4 shots were fired. I found all 4 rounds and turned them over to the Police Officer...He thanked me and the guy who originally approached me, and I told him that if he ever needed an experienced hunter in the future to find any lost metal item, to not hesitate to give me a call...Hopefully they can catch this scumbag and put him away for at least the mandatory 7 years...I was reading where they passed a law that if you commit a shooting crime around a school, playground, or any other area children gather, or if your caught dealing drugs to minors, that it is at least 7 years WITHOUT parole or early release....'BOUT TIME!!!

Oh!!! My measly finds for 15 minutes of hunting...Took 2 hours to find all 4 shells though.

A good civic duty preformed

There was never a report filed originally because friends of the shooter told the cops they were shooting fireworks off...They were ticketed and that was all that was done...the shooter and the buyer both got away...The shooter had returned to the scene twice looking for his brass, but I guess He never found it...Well buddy....I found it for ya...Hopefully they can match it to a gun, but if I reckon rightly, 22s are a dime a dozen on the streets, and he most likely ditched it in some sewer drain down the road...Hopefully it was registered to him, but I doubt it...

HH,

[size=large]at least ya got involved. smart to get a cop to watch while you did their job. the old guy is to be commended also for going the extra mile to direct the recovering of the casings.

Yeah...He is a good guy...One of the only parents that watches the kids in the park...He tries to get them to play together instead of tearing each others heads off...

HH,

Good going! You are a great ambassador for treasure hunters.

I've done some detecting for the police and some training too. Get the officers card and keep it in you wallet. Never know when you might need a get out of jail card. I was detecting in this place and a cop came and gave me a bit of a hard time. I asked if he new Deputy ________. He said of course. I told him how I had showed him how to use his Garrett CSI detector. He phoned the deputy. Talked for a moment. Apologized to me. We chatted and hunted for a bit before he left. Make friends with local law enforcement! For a lot of reasons.

Chris

Almost all the schools around here were once corn fields and almost all have lots of old ammo from years of hunting. I have found dozens of live rounds though in bark chip areas. Who knows how they get there.

Never gave that training the police a thought...I just might try that one on for size...May be some extra dough in my wallet...

I looked for a pistol along a creek for about 4 hours a few Februarys ago. It was freezing cold and my boots were leaking like crazy. Later that day I was in the Sheriff's office and he said we can't really pay you but is there anything you need? I immediately said boots and a hat. He gave me a hat and told his secretary to order me a pair of boots. They turned out to be about the nicest boots I've ever owned and they're waterproof! So I was sort of paid. I did about a 20 minute demonstartion for another county sheriff's department where I had the guys digging up coins like crazy with just a few pointers. The guy who was supposed to be the specialist said that in 10 hours of practice he found only junk. I was not compensated beyond getting business cards and told, call me if you need anything, which can be more valuable than money.
