AT Pro & Salt Water

Smudge

New member
Ok, so now that the AT Pro has been out for awhile and a lot of folks have put in some time with it, I have a question.

Garrett does point out that the AT Pro was not designed specifically for salt water beach use, but that it can function there.

My question is, how does the AT Pro stack up in your opinion against other beach detectors? (except for PI detectors, they are a whole different ball game)

I've used mine on the beach maybe six times and it does function but it's not in the same class as my Excal II or Sov GT at New Jersey beaches. It's half the cost, so I really wasn't expecting it to.

In the dry sand it is a really great detector. It finds those greenies. It needs to be ground balanced between wet and dry. A little time consuming for me because I am a wanderer. In the wet it does a fair job. It is noisy in the break so I stuck to the high tide line. For a single frequency machine it does well. As good as a Sovereign or GT ? Not in depth or stability. But I think it hits the gold harder. I never had mine in the water. It was pressure tested by Garrett so I am going to do it. All my beach hunting observations were in Pro Mode. Max has been using his the last week. I'm sure he will give you an honest report. I know he will tell you it is no SE Pro on the beach. But it is another tool to use for a specific job. That is the way I look at my detectors. Tools. Hunting the sand on a cool drizzly Winters day sounds perfect for the AT Pro. If you can only afford one detector ( and that might be all of us soon) the AT Pro will put you in the beach hunting game. I just have to say that I love the AT Pro in the dirt.

It's a little more chatty, but it can be used. At least where I hunt. Some guys say it can't be used here, supposedly they tried it. Well I use mine you just have to turn down the SENS.

If you ground balance it properly it will work well.

Also, salt water ...... make sure you give the AT Pro a good wash in clean water (no salt), the connectors turn white if you don't clean it after you have been in the sea, and they start to corrode and seize too !!
