AT PRO QUESTION ???????

I have been thinking of buying an AT PRO with the Garrett submersible headphones for actual freshwater use where the detector will be submerged most of the time. But as of late, i've been reading different posts about alot of problems the AT's have been having and it is troubling me. I am a Garrett user and love the machines and the service which is excellent. But after reading several posts, the AT Pro isn't looking so good to me. Is it me or are there legitimate problems with this particular unit ? I have a Sea Hunter Mark II which has performed excellent for my style hunting. But I am wanting to add a water unit with disc for some new freshwater spots I am going to be hunting where there will be alot of known trash. I normally would bring in the PI unit and dig everything, but I don't have alot of time to hunt these several spots like the other places I normally hunt.

Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Darryl

I am a long time Whites MXT user and love the machine. I purchased the PRO because its waterproof. It looks like i will need to send it back for the second time. It spite of this, and even when it is giving me grief i seem to always gravitate to the PRO. My MXT is at home or used by my son. When it has worked well the finds are deeper and are not picked up by my MXT. I can't help but like the PRO and am willing to send it in one more time. My train of thought today is if this machine works this well when it needs tuned, what will it be like when all is well. I am thinking great things are in the future for the PRO.

Hello Darryl,

I can understand your hesitation with getting the AT Pro, Some of the users have been having problems but Garrett will follow through and take care of the issues.

I have an AT-Pro, One from the first batch and sent it in for the coil replacement. It works wonderful and is waterproof, No leaks from the headphone or coil connector or face panel it is waterproof.

On land it does detect deep, Very good for land gold jewelry detecting or coin shooting a fun machine to use for sure. For fresh water it does well, Better than most VLF detectors but it does suffer masking from the fresh water lakes and rivers with black sand, You won't get depth under these conditions but it will operate smooth getting the shallow targets including small signals with ease. A considerable amount of depth will be lost due to the masking which is common for our area, You may be under the same hunting conditions we have with you only being 60-80 miles west from our foot hill area.

Being a serious water hunter you should try out the AT Pro, No it won't detect deep in fresh water with harsh soil conditions but it will operate smooth yet get decent depth allowing you to get the smaller gold jewelry finds.

(Stock DD coil) Recently, Came across Goldtooth at a local water spot, He was using a waterproof Tesoro Tiger I believe, We compared our machines on a thin gold chain he uses for testing and his Tesoro hit it strong, The AT- Pro hit it too but I believe had I been using the AT-Pro 6.5 X9" coil it would have had a stronger signal. Since then have ordered the 6.5 X9" coil but have not tried it in the water yet, I'm hoping the 6.5 X9"coil will reduce masking from the harsh soil we endure and enhance the smaller signals as well.

(Pi detectors) Of course they go deeper than the AT-Pro in harsh conditions, I have an Infinium and it does extremely well with no masking effect from these harsh lakes in our area. But if you want to cherry pick a spot then the AT-Pro will suit your needs, Both visual and audio ID in a waterproof detector.

Anyway, Don't hesitate and get an AT-Pro with the waterproof headset. I think you'll like it allot, Use the Pro custom mode and in harsh soil don't be afraid to reduce the sensitivity due to masking the AT-Pro still gets decent depth using minimum sens.

What you are not seeing are the thousands of units which are working perfectly fine. I am not denying that there are some units which had some issues, but when there is a very large run on a product, the numbers defining the good vs. ones with issues are very high. Garrett really backs op their products, and are made in USA.

I just got the AT Pro a few weeks ago and really, really...really like it!!! Garrett's customer service is amazing should something go wrong and for that reason alone I would go with the AT Pro. I was hunting this morning and this guy I met told me that his metal detector manufacturer sometimes can't be reached or at times doesn't return calls...Garrett is outstanding! I have taken the AT Pro to parks, sandy beaches salt and fresh water and into salt and fresh water and am very impressed. Here in the great Pacific Northwest it rains a lot :) the AT Pro is perfect rain or shine.

This will be the second time I sent my AT PRO and the first time I sent my waterproof headphone back, BUT I would never get rid of my AT PRO. Like John said. The number sold to the number of returns are not close. I love this detector even with the couple issues I've had. IT'S STILL A GREAT DETECTOR, JMO
