AT PRO Observations

I've had my Garrett AT PRO for 8 days now. I've found a lot of coins and a few pieces of costume jewelery and 1 10K gold medallion and 1 small 14K gold ring.

The AT PRO works very well on land, but it takes some practice to pinpoint with the double D coil. I'm still having a lot of trouble with the pinpointing as I thought a might find a Toyota Corrolla in one of the holes I dug.

I tried the AT PRO in the saltwater surf for about an hour and it nearly drove me nuts in the shallow ankle deep water with the constant noise and chatter, which I retested the area with my Garrett Sea Hunter and no noise or targets. The AT PRO quieted down once it was in waist deep water and dug a few bottle caps.

I will have to give a longer water test the next time out.

I suspect the noise in ankle deep saltwater is caused by waves [changing amount of saltwater over coil]. Next time manually lower the ground balance to compensate for the varying amount of saltwater over the coil. Also lowering sensitivity might help. LET US KNOW the results.

The AT Pro is very accurate on pinpointing. Here is the best way to pinpoint with the AT Pro:

1. Don't even touch the pinpoint button. I'm not kidding, you don't need it.
2. When you get a signal wave the coil across and visually remember where the center is.
3. Turn the coil 90* and do the same. You will now have a "Cross" that shows the exact pinpoint.
4. Go to your local dealer and buy a garrett pro pointer. It will be the best investment you've ever made aside from the AT Pro.

RCDetector,

Thanks for the advice on pinpointing, I need all I can get. I have a Garrett Pro Pointer it works great just not as great as the depth of targets located by the AT PRO.

I have the same issues in shallow saltwater surf ....You either have to follow Ralphs advise or go deeper into the water as you mentioned ...... It doesn't apear that the AT Pro likes rapid moving saltwater.....Haven't tested freshwater , but saltwater is trouble .... Either wait for the tide ot go out , or go deeper ....Jim

These should help cut down on your learning curve. Good luck! :detecting:

Use the Pinpoint button like a shifter in a car and you can narrow down the target to 2 inches. You "zoom in", so to speak..

Example..

1. You find a good target. Move the coil totally off the target, press the pinpoint button and rescan the target. Let's say the detector sounds off across and 10 inch area. Release the pinpoint button.

2. Now move the coil about 3 inches from where you think the target is, and press pinpoint again. Now scan the target and the detector will zoom in and only sound off across a 5 inch area.

3. Release the button, move the coil 2 inches to the side of the target, and press pinpoint again. Now the detector will sound off only right on top of the target.

4. At this point, the target is directly under the center of your coil (about 1 inch in front of the bottom of the shaft).

Practice a few time with a test coin. If you use this method, the AT Pro is one of the most accurate pinpointers out there.
