AT Pro Observations

Dream Catcher

New member
Hi everyone,

So, I took delivery on a new AT Pro last month and I been out twice for a couple hours each time. Quite frankly, the AT exceeded my expectations and it is easier to use than my other machine. I am really happy and look forward to spring when I can get out more often. The intent of this post is to share what I have found in the operation of the AT pro as compared to what I had read about it.

1. It is light weight and is easy to use. I am not constantly adjusting the machine like I was on my previous detector.
2. I bought one of the little devices that keeps the shaft from wobbling. It's worth the 15 bucks. Found it on ebay.
3. The audio response is clear and relatively easy to interpret. It matches well with the visual display. Iron audio is a great feature!
4. I don't miss the threshold... I hunted and area that I had been at before and found more coins.
5. I still am not able to interpret the 50-60 range on the target ID numbers... I know this is the nickle/foil/gold range.
6. Overall, It is the best detector I have owned. The ease of operation, sensitivity and depth is that of a higher priced machine.

Here are my questions:
1. Is the general rule to dig everything in the 50 range? My gold wedding band registers a 52.
2. I have bought 2 Garrett carry bags for the AT pro. The second is larger that the first. How the he... do you fit it in the bag. Both bags seem too small.
3. When you are evaluating a target do you guys switch through the modes to determine which is most accurate?

I am anxious to hear your opinions!

The more targets you dig in this zone, the better chances you get for getting gold plus more junk. Personally, if it gives a good audio sound in all directions, I would dig it. Junk targets sound like "JUNK"....a sound that you will learn over time.

If you shorten the lower stem as far as possible, and flip the coil (so the end rests on the lower rod up so the overall length of the detector is the shortest)....it should fit. otherwise, you will have to remove the coil and store it in the large pocket.

3. When you are evaluating a target do you guys switch through the modes to determine which is most accurate?

I would suggest you do exactly that. what better way to orientate yourself to the AT Pro to its audio sounds and depth characteristics. Eventually you will build enough confinence to just stay in a preferred mode and metal detect.

gold for me..........47 to 59 or so.............same as pull tabs, alum..........u have to dig it.............there is no magical detector out yet and the atpro is not it.

just use pro mode...........forget all that cheking crap.

what do u use the bags for............??

i1jab regards

atpro is beautifully of MD important to pay attention to the tonality of the sound
if in sound it is powerful, object nearby and almost firm ID, if deeper object the sound is more weak and a little stable ID, cembia + the numeration, however the if I feel weak the sound I dig equally if there is not then interference of the iron with low tone, surely interesting object if they are 2 tonalities combined low / tall, you/he/she can be iron near coin or other good metal, from 2 months that I use atpro has already happened me.
Luckily my MD built a lot of good, can happen that some are not perfect however garret I think it changes or MD mends
good hunting

Good Information and thanks for your replies.

Garrett offers two carry bags, much like a gun bag. I ordered the canvas bag BEFORE I had the detector. It is 25.00. I have tried all configurations and it simply won't fit properly into the bag, at all. Then, thinking the vinyl bag was bigger (and it is by about 3" longer & 65.00) still no go. I store my detectors in these bags when I am traveling or not using the machine.

I have tried folding the coil back over the stem. Still too long. I called the company I bought them from -- you'd recognize the company -- and they assured me the AT pro would fit. After I talked with them a while, they had actually not tried to fit an AT pro in the bag but used an Ace 350. I really don't want to remove the coil every time so... back to the drawing board.

The At pro will fit into the standard bag! BUT there's in definite sequence to getting it in there and it's snug.

Re: 50 to 60 range

Tonight I was in the farm behind our house just practicing. I got a very strong 52 signal. It said 10 inches. I dug and dug and dug. It kept telling me something was right in the middle of the hole. I dug some more. I wasn't leaving till I found out what it was. I dug some more.......blisters on my hands.....finally hit the alum. sprite can!!!!! It took me 15 minutes to make the discovery....uggggg.
